1st gen 4runner question

Has anyone installed cross-over steering on a 84-85 4runner with an OME lift? After installing my lift I have some pretty bad bump steer going on. I have heard that installing cross over on a truck with less than 3" of lift will cause problems. Has anyone else had this problem after installing an OME lift?

Sorry that I don't have an answer to your question. I had about 4.5" of suspension lift on my 84 before adding the crossover steering. I thought I would see a vast improvement, but I didn't. I did have some bump steer before, and I have some now, but my springs are tweaked up front and I think that might be part of the problem now.

BTW, do you have a pic of your rig with the 255's? I would like to see how our trucks would look with that size.
Thanks

This pic is before the OME lift.

If you can, take a photo of your steering set up. That would make it easier to possibly help you :sombrero:

typically the +3" lift recommendation is not due to steering geometry, but clearance issues with steering arm and drag link hitting the spring.
Have you checked all your bushings/TRE for excessive wear/ightened, done a decent job on alignment and checked it again, wheel bearings ok?
Like tacochaser said, photos will help

Do a search on www.marlincrawler.com for bumpsteer issues similar to your setup and you may find better answers.

ACTUALLY.... you need the 4" lift so the steering rods, which with hi-steer will now be above the spring, dont impact the oil pan. The only time you will have problems with the steering rods hitting the spring is if your springs are abnormally thick (usually 4-5 leafs depending on leaf thickness will clear the tie rod with 1/4" - 1/8") or you have more than 2* caster shims to rotate the pinion up to get rid of driveline vibrations. You cant rotate the pinion up behind the axle without also rotating the steering arms (and attached tie rod) down onto the spring. Thats also why most hi-steer manufacturers recommend the use of the FJ80 high pinion fron differential in your front mini truck axle - its a bolt-in upgrade that offers about a 30% increase in strength, and the driveshaft mounting location raises up about 4" helping with the driveline vibration issues necessitating the angle shims.

Hi Jon,

I have the front (light) OME spring packs and OME shocks on the '85 and haven't noticed steering issues. In fact I think there is less bump steer since the OME suspension soaks up the bumps so much better.

You might try a different steering stabilizer. I have an old Rancho stabilizer that I think has a lot of damping.
