2 Gen/2.5 Gen Question (About to be new owner)

After searching around craiglist for a while I found a 1997 Montero SR. It's got the SOHC 3.5, rear locking diff, timing belt was changed this past november, passing smog, no leaks, and he's asking 2300. Pretty set on pulling the trigger on this tomorrow. I noticed, cruising through the threads that the 2.5 gen trucks are 98+ and they dropped the SR designation and the 2 gen trucks have the DOHC engine. What's the deal with the '97 Monteros? How much of a change was there between 96 and 97 minus the engine swap and I'm assuming higher gearing ala. 2.5gen?

Super stoked to get into this. This will be my first 4x4. I've been a sportscar guy my whole life and just sold my car to (E30s, STIs, Evos, etc...) and get into a new world of trucks.

I was the same with my LSX powered cars. Needless to say, I haven't gotten any speeding tickets since I got the Montero and I can keep rear tires a lot longer as well.

Haha yeah I feel about the same, it'll be nice not to have the temptation to pull onto the highway at +120mph.

Preach it. Just sold my 92 Galant VR4 to make room for a Gen I Monty. I can't wait to get the engine back in the Galant so I can deliver it to the new owner and bring home my truck. Can't wait to start exploring the southwest. Congrats on your new rig, wheeler.

I really like my Gen 2.5, but I wish it had a rear locker, the air ride suspension, and a turbocharged V6, but nothing is perfect.:smiley_drive:

haha yeah I'm sure it'll take me a bit of time getting used to not hugging the road, stiff suspension and all that.

edit: all that excitement and it turns out the seller didn't have the title in his name...what the heck

Amen to that, my last two cars before my Monty were a Dodge SRT-4, and then a Subaru WRX wagon, both of those were great for getting tickets, so far the Monty is helping me behave ;)

Welcome to the fold wheeler, though I'll be honest I do occasionaly miss the rumble from my WRX, and the ability to take corners sideway's without the threat of flipping ;) I love my Monty:victory:

Yeah it's a bummer. I found a 1999 Monty with the rear locking diff I'm looking at now. We'll see how it goes. Trying to be patient and make a good decision vs. getting hasty and buying a junker.

The first has less than 24 hours left to bid. Both are SRs.

I appreciate the effort, traveling for a truck is kinda out of the option right now. I'm on a TAD assignment right now and can't go for a trip (assuming that makes sense to you considering your sig).

Apparently every montero owner in southern california doesn't understand that it's illegal to sell a vehicle without current smog papers and refuses to sell a smogged vehicle.

I got you man. You could always see if they'd ship it to you for a fee if you can get it for the right price. You could always get some young college student looking for some extra cash to go pick it up for you. Or you could get a cherry and make him do it. :)
