2000 Discovery Overheating

I'm a Mitsubishi owner posting for a friend with a Rover. What is the most common cause of overheating with these rigs? He can idle in the driveway with no overheating but cannot make it 2 miles down the road without pegging the temp gauge. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Has the fan clutch been checked? Thermostat ? Cooling system flushed? Hoses not rotten and clasping and impeding flow under pressure ? Water pump good?

X2 above. There are a number of reasons these temperamental but great rigs overheat. You need to check everything . But mostly you need to stay vigilant by being proactive on these very capable beauties. Remember pay cash for them as your going to have a monthly payment anyway ...but in my opinion well worth it .

Check the reservoir and cap, if possible just change both of them as it's cheap insurance future anyways.

Assuming the thermostat isn't bad and the cooling system is full, the next most likely thing is a cracked block.

I would not recommend just throwing parts at it without actually trying to diagnose the problem.
