2000 Monty

So in our endeavors of finding an interim family car... We were browsing little lots in our new city that we just moved to. There we were cruising through this little dirt car lot, when from out behind a white van, the front end of a Montero peaks out. I start getting excited, as I pull a little bit farther I see that it's a gen 2.5 and slam our truck into park.

We walked out of there with the Monty for 3k flat, 166k miles, leather seats, but no lockers.

It's also missing the third row so we will need to find one hopefully at a yard.

While driving down the road today we heard a noise from below the Monty. We were just on a semi crappy piece of asphalt road, then heard a couple of popping metal noises. I pulled over, inspected the underbelly to no avail. We continued driving, and later on after driving some more and hitting another patch of crappy road, the noise happened again. The second time it happened it felt as though the rig wasn't running smooth and then the noise happened. Once the noise occurred, the ride smoothed out again.

Not sure what he cause may be... Something in the driveline?

We do need a new idler arm. We took it in for an alignment which they wouldn't do due to needing this part replaced. Could this be the possible culprit as well? Would a bad idler arm make a sort of popping noise and cause a less smooth ride? Firestone checked ball joints, unjoints, shocks, center link, tie rod ends, cv boots and those all checked out ok. The print out from them says the idler bracket pivots...that could possibly cause the popping as well?

A few other issues we have encountered:
The read door doesn't open from the outside, I imagine I need to go in and fix something on the inside such as the latch.

Second, the doors don't lock from the drivers door. I assume it's the main relay or something electronically related.

Those are the biggest issues we have so far. And I'm super excited to have a Monty finally... Only took 4 years.

I have 3rd row seats from a 2000 in Grey if you want them. I can't tell from your post where you are. Also the 2000 didn't come with a locker. Hopefully you'll find the solution to your popping noise. It could be a suspension bushing somewhere.

And congrats on the 2.5 purchase.

There is a switch on the backside of the driver's lock cylinder to activate power locks, I have trouble with some worn out keys working poorly in the door locks.

The rear hatch latch release is a common issue. Quick search will show you some pages on it. Mine was repaired by previous owner by tapping a screw into the mechanism. It can be accessed with about 10 minutes of work removing these read door interior panel.

Rear door probably just needs a new outside handle - they are plastic and break very easily. See my build thread for more details.

If the door locks are bouncing back to lock right away when you press unlock then that is also an easy fix. I just did mine and will post the procedure this week on my build thread.
