2001 Landcruiser

Local Toyota dealer has one with 83k miles. Local trade, clean, probably a grocery getter but don't know for sure.

Asking $19,500.

What can anyone tell me about this model year, what to look out for, and what might be a fair offer? It would be a weekender for regional camping, mostly solo but sometimes with my young sons. No serious gonzo off-roading but living in Idaho, we have lots of back country roads.

Thanks!

The price is definitely high in today's buying climate. I've seen a number of nice 2001's around Denver for $15-$17K. That was the asking price. A neighbor of mine recently bought a very clean 2000 with around 100K for $12K.

The 90K service is expensive. It can run as high as $2K at some shops.

The 100 series is a very trouble free vehicle. I have a 2000 with nearly 110K. I've put 60K on it in 3 1/2 years. The only issues I've had outside the std service items are cracked exhaust manifolds and dead starter contacts. Both are common. You will know if the manifolds are cracked if you hear a faint ticking upon cold startup.

Geez, I love this forum! Living where I do there are few of these for sale (vs. Jeeps and other SUV's) so it's good to get a little feedback.

I currently have a 2500 HD EC, LB GM 4x4 and would like something a bit shorter. ;)

The dealer says they'll take $16k for it which strikes me as pretty fair. I don't see all these cheap LC's in searching around that you guys are seeing. This one has been on their lot for 3 1/2 months.

Do the second row seats fold flat or tumble forward enough that a 6 footer could sleep back there? One thing I always liked about the Suburban over all of its betters was the tent on wheels aspect. Lots of length in the back. How much flat floor length is available in the 2001 LC?

BTW, the local Toyota dealer quoted $800 for the 90k service and said many shops charge way more. We've had good experience with them and our Camry Hybrid.

The fact that it has been there 3 1/2 months tells you what the current market conditions are like. If it is the truck that you want, then go for it. If getting the best deal possible is your goal then take your time and one will come along.

With prices of large SUVs falling so fast, KBB.com is probably overestimating the prices in the real world today. But using Kelley Blue Book as a guide, the dealer probably gave the seller between $12K and $14K for the vehicle.

Since the dealer came down to $16K without much bargaining on your part, I think I'd offer $15K, and ask them to include the 90K service. I'd also ask them to waive the "documentation fees" that dealers use to squeeze a few hundred dollars extra out of buyers at the end of the deal.

You should point out that your family has been a good customer in the past, and that you expect to do business with the dealer in the future.

If you have young kids, a 2001+ is good because it'll have the LATCH system for car seats. I'm in the market for a similiar vehicle for a daily driver/trail rig, nothing too extreme.
Also, www.ih8mud.com is a good forum that's dedicated to Land Cruiser's, lots of good info there as well.
