2001 Montero Sport underbody skid plate... wear to source?

The uphill battle begins
My sport is missing its factory rear most underbody skid plate. I might venture into taking the little beast off road some and would like to have the option to put the factory plates or better back on. I have the front most one, but it did not come with the rear most one. anyone have one laying around they don't want or have a source to buy one... I've only seen them overseas.. not sure what that would cost to import... LOL!

Factory skids are junk if you want to go off road.

Build them or ship from Australia!

That would be ideal, but I'm not sure I can justify the import shipping costs to the spouse just yet. ;) Working on it though. I want the clear top tail lights, the OME heavy duty rear lift springs, and some plates... wish I could get a bundle deal! lol

Here is what I did as a result of not finding aftermarket support for my NM.
I'm not sure if it has the same dimensions as the sport...

SUPER NICE! Loving it! Impressive looking. How have they held up to any impacts?

If I can figure out a fabrication place that will not take one look at me and laugh and jack their rates... ;) Bad thing about being a female in the car world. However my contractor that built our patio addition just might know someone.... hmmmmm....

Guess if I can get my hands on a cheap rear one... even dinked up... to use as a template! gears are turning

BTW-if you find OEM skids you can always re-enforce them with angle iron. One of my local friends w/ a Gen 2, was looking at the transfer case skid that "KIRK" built and copied the idea for re-enforcing the front two skids. Have them installed but haven't tested them yet.

A little tough to see now that they are painted, but re-enforced sections run from front to back.

Nice... also a good idea... would love to hear how they hold up when it counts

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.

Thanks for the compliment.
They have held up great!
The bottom part of the z-bend has taken a few good bashes, but it's nothing the single jack hammer won't take care of when you get home.
The transmission plate is great...super stiff.

I highly recommend using cardboard for the template.
It's free
It's easy to work with
It will hold its shape (it can be reenforced with tape)

Mock up exactly what you want with folds in the correct location.
Let the shop that's doing the folds know the desired dimensions and angle(s).

Have fun.

Adventure Time!
Gen3 skids are thinner and more useless than the previous generation. I believe the skid under the tranny was plastic; can't confirm because mine didn't have one.

Just depends on how you use it. Mine is used fairly heavily on trails. I bent the front crossmember (custom replacement), broke off the skid mounting tabs and bent aftermarket skids. Sure, for light use to keep branches from puncturing your oil/trans pan most skids will work. Rocks or putting the entire vehicle weight will destroy lesser skids.

BTW. Get a good gas tank skid (factory is fiber-plastic). I ruined my gas tank and had to buy a new one (over $600) - used ones were dented to heck at the wracking yards.

well if I go the custom route... I will be sure to address the entire undercarriage as suggested.

What is the best steel grade to use when custom fabricating. Guess it a balance btw weight and durability?

I would just stick with the stock one personally....unless you find yourself in areas where you are bottoming out/dragging often.
