ok so as some know i have a 2002 f150 4x4 supercrew with a 4.6 v8 and an auto trans. i think a 4r70w. anyways i tow quite frequently and dont really trust automatic transmissions. as i am used to our farm trucks and the auto is new to me and i just dont like it. so what im wanting to do is to swap in a manual transmission from???? im not in need of an imediate swap but i would rather gather parts now and prepare for when the auto does decide to go.

ok heres what i know
f150 supercrew was never optioned with a manual transmission but i can use parts from same body style trucks like clutch pedals etc.
i would prefer to use a hydro clutch and pull lines off a parts truck
and i would like this conversion to be somewhat simple because this is my daily driver and i would only have a few days to complete it.

does anyone have any suggestions on what transmission would be a good option? has anyone done a conversion on a 97-03 f150 like this? any information regarding such conversion is appreciated

dont know much about fords, but i just finished a swap on my 97 tahoe, we got it done in 2 days, the only major problem we had was gettting the clutch pedal in, you need to look under your dash and under your hood and make sure you have room for a braket, and a master cylinder, good luck!

Those year trucks in the half tons used a M5OD in the 4.6s and the 5.4 trucks didnt get a 5 speed option. So just look around for 8cyl versions of your body style with a 5 speed.

Im like you, not a real big fan of autos, but i had a 02 F150 with a 5.4 and the 4R70W. And with a 5.4 and a limited slip axle and my age group, you can figure how i drove that truck haha. And I towed my rock crawler about 10 times a year and i never had a problem with the transmission. So I really wouldn't be to worried about the auto.

But if you really wanna over do it, maybe the ZF6 from the 3/4 ton that had the 5.4 might bolt up to your 4.6, I have no idea

I was thinking the zf6 would be cool but my dad has one in his powerjoke and the thing is a monster! do you think the m50d would hold up? on towing specs it states the manual transmission for the same year ford had less towing ability. which i find really hard to believe. does anyone know if i will have to change any wiring? i also checked. i have plenty of room for the pedals and master cylinder. heck it even looks like theyll just bolt right in!

Im pretty sure the auto in that year had some electronic controls on it that would be controlled by the engine computer. your best bet with the least hassles if you try to do that swap is to find a donor vehicle with the manual in it and get all the bits including the ecu...

well the M5OD isnt known for its strength, but at the same time its also not know to be pathetically weak. I do know i looked into a 5 speed swap at one time for my 5.4 and people said they couldn't keep them together behind a 5.4 and some aggressive driving. Dont really have any first hand experience with one tho.

youd prob. have to get a bellhouseing made but have you thought about a GM or Dodge nv4500? there everywhere and cheap and just amazing transmissions
