2003 Montero Limited Bent Valves? Need HELP!

Hi Everyone, I just did a timing belt change on my 2003 Montero Limited. The Montero just died at a stop light a couple of weeks ago and when I restarted it it ran rough and was knocking. I limped it home and determined that I had a timing belt problem. After dis-assembly I discovered that the cam on the #1 cylinder side was 2 teeth out of time. I installed all new timing belt, tensioner, pulleys etc. Just started it today and I get a loud knocking on the #1 cylinder side. I am thinking that a valve or valves is bent on the #1 cylinder side. In listening with a mechanics stethoscope I only hear the knocking coming from the #1 cylinder side. Before tearing it down I would like to get some opinions as to what the problem is and any advice. What does fixing a cylinder head like this usually entail? Should I do it my self or have done at a machine shop. I have done valves on a mower engine before but never on a large head like this. Any guidance would be helpful. Thanks.

Do a compression check on the cylinder to see if it is sealing. Leave the head work to a qualified shop. It could be something more simple. If you're not sure take it to a dealer if possible.
Good luck.

I'm Getting Around To It
If it indeed bent valve(s), my course of action would be to at least investigate the cost of a replacement, complete assembly from Clearwater Cylinder Heads, in Clearwater FL. They're online, of course. Might be easier/cheaper than taking the head in to a shop. At least check...
