2004 Tacoma Double Cab Gas Tank Strap Rust

I've had the frame coated and the Spare Tire recall completed by Toyota. Today the strap holding the skid plate and gas tank to the frame rusted through. Tank dropped about two inches. Glad I wasn't off road with the kids or in another more precarious situation. Anyways ratchet strapped the tank to the crossmember and limped home. I'm identifying the best approach to correct the situation. Should I contact Toyota regional and the local dealer (Handy Toyota/a good guy), or just the dealer.

I just had the frame replaced on my truck and I've never heard of a recall on the tank straps. You might just have to replace them yourself and consider it upkeep on a 10yr old truck in rust country. I had my rear bumper rust through on my 99 when I lived up in Underhill. The body panels were rust free but damn the salt does some serious damage.

Best of luck,
Jorge

That's a new one on me. My 2001 DC 4WD TRD had the frame rustproofed and the spare tire hoist replaced (delivered in IL, so eligible), but I guess I gotta go look at my tank straps now...

In what state does the truck live?

The truck lives in VT. With the precedent of rusting frames and spare tire carriers rusting, a gas tank strap rusting and dropping the tank on the road is a serious situation. I'm trying to determine how common this situation is.

I think NHTSA may have a reporting system -- your feedback, especially with photos, could be useful. As much as I don't like many things about that agency, their recall programs (voluntary and mandated) have probably done us good.

Same think happened to my double cab '04 Tacoma last week. Did you contact the dealer?
