2005 Montero tire size question???

Hey All! I recently purchased a 2005 Montero Limited (I have a 1998 Monty as well which I am selling), and would like to put the tires from the old one onto the new, but am not sure if the size will transfer over even with the OME suspension kit I will be putting on. The size I want to use is 285/75r16 (Goodyear Duratracs)--does anyone know if this will work, or do I need to go a size smaller...? I've seen some nice work on here, and plan on emulating some of the upgrades! Thanks for any and all comments/advice!

I would only go that big once lifted. I'm just now putting 265/75/r16 and wouldn't feel comfortable going higher with the stock gen3 suspension. If you have plans for a lift then i would assume they should be fine once lifted.

Lift will NOT provide increased clearance for larger tires. You are dealing with the same suspension travel range stock as lifted. You will rub the exact same spots lifted or stock as the suspension cycles. This is a huge misunderstanding people have with IFS / IRS rigs. Only on level ground is where you may rub less after being lifted as the ride height is increased. Of course, most people lift rigs for the looks. So yes, it looks better being lifted with larger tires.

That being said... I can say, 255/85/16s fit no rubbing through the entire range on the stock wheels. Note: my tires measure an actual 33.5" in diameter where most 285s measure 32.5" in actual diameter. I wouldn't be surprised if the 285s fit without rubbing. After installing 1.25" front wheel spacers I only get a slight rub on the inner fender liner when the suspension is compressed.

I'm debating moving up to 35s on my rig with some minor trimming after regearing to 4.90s.

Not for sale on Craigslist. I have a friend who is interested in it, but if he decides not to pull the trigger, then it will be.

The main reason for the lift and bigger tires is to combat the Minnesota snow. I will so some mild/moderate offroading, but probably won't be flexing out the suspension too often (I guess you never know though...) Thanks for the help.
