Like anything else - depends how you drive it:) I have a 2005 and for mixed driving - mostly highway/country roads and some short-range urban, I average about 9.5 litres per 100km - that's with an aftermarket (TJM alloy) bumper, full set of Skid Row skid plates and General Grabber AT2s 235/70/R16 (one of the factory-recommended sizes for the UK). When I've done almost exclusively urban (mostly around London - so a LOT of sitting in traffic), this goes up to about 13.2 l/100km. I do drive fairly carefully and mostly with a mind to fuel economy, because of the price of diesel over here - the cheapest I found this weekend was £1.29/litre - I saw it at a lot of places locally for £1.35/litre.

As for veggie oil - not recommended by the manufacturer, and a number who've tried it had problems I believe with with seals etc - so probably best used with regular diesel. Have a look at these sites for all things KJ:- http://www.lostjeeps.com ; http://www.jeepkj.com ; http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=158

I could live with 25 mpg's, I have seen some people claim around 30 on the highway.

I think most people that are getting in the high 20's or low 30's have bypassed their egr or at least keep it highly maintained. I haven't driven mine enough to get consistent fuel mileage. The only trip it has been on I got 22mpg on tank (80 mph into a Wyoming headwind) to 27mpg @ 65 mph. I have a bone stock 2006 with only 22,000 miles.

The EPA rates the 2006 diesel Liberty with auto trans at 19 mpg city, 23 highway. So Lancer's report of 13.2 l/100km city, 9.5 litres per 100km highway (18 mpg city, 25 highway) sounds like it's similar to Liberties in USA.

For comparison, the EPA rates the 2006 Liberty with 3.7L V6 and auto trans at 15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway. So the diesel version gets about 25% better fuel economy than the gas engine in the same vehicle.

Gas mileage is excellent since it doesn't use any.... cause there's no spark-infested engine under the hood.

When I first bought my CRD and it was bone stock I was getting 26mpg in mostly highway driving. When I added the lift, armor, steel front & rear bumpers and 32" MT/Rs it dropped down to 16 - 18 mpg. After I switched to 4.10 gears economy increased to where it is now: 21 MPG

The spark infested guys with similarly equipped vehicles are getting 14-16 MPGs. My first trip offroad when it was still stock except for armor was on The White Rim Trail in Canyonlands; I was the only CRD among 9 KJs. When we reached camp the gassers were down to 1/4 tank and were worried about making it out and I still had 3/4 tank and had a jerry can with 5 gallons on my bumper.

My favorite part about the CRD offroad is being able to idle over most obstacles when in 4 LO.... that and it doesn't suffer spark infestation.

LOST JEEPS has a huge amount of info on CRDs
21 mpgs is nothing with them, I get that on a trip easy with my "spark infested" motor, and thats 4 inch plus of lift, heavy armor, ARB bumper 32s and 4.10s
So you should see 25 -27 easy

When I said 9.5l/100km - that's mixed highway/ back roads driving. When I've driven purely on a motorway - it works out to about 8.3l/100km - can be less depending partly on the fuel. The uberdiesels tend to give me a bit more, some supermarket fuels a bit less.

Thank you all for great input. Although I've tried very hard to explain my girlfriend that it is the right car for her, I've lost. Instead we bought last night a very fun to drive but less off road oriented ride.

Thanks again, Tomas
