2008 Toyota Tundra Overland Build Suggestions?

Hello all! I am new to the Forum and overland world. I am currently building up my 2008 Toyota Tundra to be a capable american traveler and looking for some advice! I plan on taking trips to see the real USA, not all the common tourist attractions but the real down home back roots places. I want to get out on the back roads and be able to camp in comfort but self contained. I don't plan on any hardcore trails but do plan on getting off grid.

So far I add what I can when budget allows. This is my current set up. I am looking to make it a little more trail worthy but keep overall road manners as it is my daily driver.IMG_4935.jpgScreen Shot 2014-04-08 at 1.13.53 PM.jpg

My question to you experienced folks is what should I add next? I am looking to get out on the road at the end of may, and want to know what would be the most beneficial additions. So far this is what I have done and what I am looking to do. All suggestions are appreciated!

DONE:
Matching cap
Thule roof rack system
Rhino Rack sunseeker awning
TRD Wheels
Cooper Discover ST MAXX tires
AFE Cold air intake
Corsa Exhaust

WHAT I WANT TO ADD:
Rear tire swing Bumper (Body Armor)
Front Warn Trans4mer grill guard with 2inch receiver
2inch receiver winch
White knuckle off road rock sliders
OME Suspension system
Decked Truck bed system

Anything that I missed that I should really have? Thanks!

Welcome fellow 2nd Gen Tundrabird.

A few questions for you.
Do you plan on sleeping on the decked truck bed or in a tent?
Do you have a gear list? i.e., propane stove, bedding, food, water, extra fuel, fridge, compressor, fires extinguisher, communications etc etc
Full size spare?
Do you plan on 4 season camping? Winter camping?
Solo trips or with a partner?

These were the type of items I had on my list when I first started to overland. We started with our FJ80 (with my fiancé and cat).
We soon decided to get a larger vehicle (the Tundra) and found that with all the gear, tools, food, water and litterbox, bedding - space was still quickly taken.
We camp all year - During 25°F winter nights, the camper got uncomfortably cold. The foam hardens and the windows frost.

We eventually sprang for a pop-up camper but that's another story.

As for your mod list, I can only comment on the OME suspension. I have the OME Heavy + Dakar & helpers and have been very happy with them. I'd recommend budgeting for a front diff spacer and a carrier bushing bracket.

Take a look at bigwapitijohnny build for some inspiration too.

Welcome amo292,
.
There is a wealth of information here on the ExPo portal forums. I would add that you be intentional about the weight of your rig when you are finished. Early on in the build, I had a 'be prepared' mentality which bled into carrying everything including the kitchen sink. This has led to my rig being bloated and heavy. I am now re-considering my armamentaria, and I am eliminating many things ~ things that I have not used since I put it on my Tundra years ago. Don't get me wrong, I am still prepared, I'm just smarter about it...Sounds like you have a solid plan. Your Tundra platform is a great choice in my opinion. Good luck and PM me if I can be of any help...

MINO, thanks for your kind words!

I would plan on sleeping in the cap on the Decked system. Seems like it would be a great multi purpose storage tool.
I do have a gear list and stuff from previous camping trips.
I have the stock one but I am looking to get another matching spare and a tire swing bumper
I would be four seasons with my medium size dog and possibly the gf.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Your truck has actually been my inspiration! Im looking to do something very similar but keep myself contained in the truck and lightweight until I get some more experience under my belt.

I was actually hoping you could give me some information on that awesome rear bumper that you have! Were can I find me one of those? it seems to be built extremely well.
If its better I can just PM you.

Thanks for the welcome and the help guys!

My had my front and rear bumpers made at Expedition One. The rear tire carrier was an option that they offered at one time. I have heard that this option was no longer available. I have heard that they are considering making this option again, though. I can recommend EXO as a company. This is my second set of bumpers on a vehicle, and I can recommend them without hesitation.

Let me know if I can help in anyway.
