Hello,

Seems all my post here lately have been due to issues, and the help here has been great so i'm back. I have searched all around and found a post about the issue I am having but can not find it again.

2012 Jeep JKU
4.88s, 35s, Gobi Stealth rack (To give you an idea of my rolling resistance)
Auto, 95,000 miles
I was NOT towing anything just the Jeep

So took a road trip from Virginia to Georgia, the first half of the trip went great, on the return some issues started. Average high speed of 80-85. Stopped for gas and the Jeep was very sluggish to pull forward, engine RPM came up to about 2700 rpm before it would even move. I assumed it was because I was on a bit of an incline back tires were in a rut, pulled up to the pump got gas. Left the station all seemed well, transmission acted normal. Got on the highway and went over a bridge had a slight dip in the road and on came the CEL. This was about 8pm in S.C. on a Sunday so no way to get the code read. Fuel mileage dropped to about 6mpg, I got around 150 miles to the tank. Assumed it was bad gas possibly due to the flooding from the hurricane, ran it till the low fuel light came on and then some more, stopped to fill it up added fuel treatment and water remover gassed up. Transmission was acting up again, and was putting off a lot of heat could feel it through the console the bottle of water in the cup holder was even to hot to drink. Probably a bad idea but that time of night but me and the wife had to be at work Monday morning so I pushed on lightly. Keeping the speed lower 70ish which is the posted limit. Looking back now the Jeep would not down shift going up hill, so after the fill up the MPG returned to around 13 which is normal for mine on the highway. CEL stayed on, Jeep handled completely normal. Made it home and parked it, this evening after work I was going to take it up the road to the shop have the CEL read and the Jeep will NOT shift out of first gear. I let the RPM get up to about 4500 and let off, using the shiftier trying to manually shift will not do anything. Display continues to read D and not allow you to manual shift it. Also this evening when I started it and shifted from park to reverse to back out it was a very hard shift like you were on a hill, went to neutral and drive and it was a very hard shift. that is when I made an attempt at taking it to the shop and it would not shift.

Fluid is good, not low, not high, not burnt I changed it 7-8 months ago. No leaks.

Anyone have any idea? Sounds like it has to be electrical IMO, mainly because you can not get it to manual go from drive to 1 even at a full stop.

It will be interesting to see what code it's throwing.
Did the self check just how and it comes back to nothing stored. Using the key going on then hold and cycle 3 times it will display a code if stored. The light is still on but no code shown... gonna get itnto the shop ASAP.

Sounds like a good plan, hopefully it's not a faulty ECM/TCM. For what it's worth, the code scanners are pretty cheap these days. I keep a bluetooth OBD2 reader in my center console and read the codes using the Torque app on my phone if something pops up on a trip, but the wired plug in ones work great as well.

Didn't you just have some battery issues as well?

Yep, one of the batteries went bad, not to long before that the oil cooler cracked. Before that who knows what... lol bought the Jeep with 18 miles on it and I broke 95k this weekend... I love it been through a lot, can’t really be mad when it breaks down.

I hear you, all good. My point was the computer also controls charge rates, etc, so maybe the issues are related. Hopefully not, and it's just a coincidence, more of a when it rains it pours scenario!

So after a lengthy conversation with the service manager at STARR motors he suggested to set the pro cal back to factory settings. Then reprogram and BAM problem solved. As soon as I reset it the that was stuck on went off, CEL turned off and all is normal again. Drove it and it is 100% normal.

HUGE shout out to STARR Motors in Suffolk Va. and Joe Bonnie the service manager. Not your average Jeep dealer. Just as an example one of there many projects at the dealership them are converting a Jeep TJ into an LS1 set up for a customer. I know odd right a dealer that will do what ever the customer ask. Also they have an off road course at the dealer and there shop rig is a Diesel Jeep Liberty on 42” MTRs, powered by front and rear D60s with a long arm lift.

Great news! Glad you got it sorted and that's great you have a good Jeep dealer to work with in solving issues!

Kudos to a dealer that isn't a scumbag. Most I've come across would have tried to turn your issue into a $800+ repair bill.

Ahhh... it is all happening again.... Jeep has been perfect all week, took it out to grab a few things and it was fine, then headed home now it will not manually shift anymore with the shifter and run up to about 2700rpm before it will pull off. Gonna run the procal again but if it is not holding the program thinking the TCM might be going bad. Will see what happens.
