What warranted the new front axel being replaced on a six year old truck ?

Front pinion seized and snapped off while I was driving slowly luckily. The dealership said they had only seen it happen one other time in 25 years. Luckily I had just bought the extended warranty so they replaced everything. They had to ship it on a flatbed from Detroit.
