2014 Xterra purchase?

I own a jeep so I am not really biased towards either company. But my only comment is that it seems like Toyota seems to hold their value a lot longer than Nissan does, so if you want to resell down the road you're not losing at much money. So, in a way the Toyota is investing in something that will hold value longer.

I looked at the trail 4runner and the pro4x. Decided to get the pro4x and never looked back. I honestly like it better for a number of reasons. Being that I got my pro4x with a 100k bumper to bumper from nissan, loaded with leather and a great RF sound system etc for about 12 grand less than toyota wanted for a comparable 4runner was icing on the cake.

Granted, at that price difference you get the KDSS system, which is a pretty neat system....but that wasnt worth the price difference to me. I found no use for the crawl control, and have found the hill descent control on the X to be more than adequate.

Keep in mind a new 4runner trail equipped out is 12-13k more than a comparable xterra pro4x. I dont argue that years down the road the 4runner will be worth a littlw more, but some of that is because it costs nearly 50% more when new.... iirc Toyota wanted 45ish for the 4runner and I ended up with my xterra at about 32k (thats all options the same, with the extended warranties.) Toyota wouldnt budge one nickel on the price, so we took the xterra out for a test drive before committing, and loved it. Showed them our auto service's suggested pricing we wanted to pay and told them we were ready to buy right now, and they started paperwork.

Welcome to Xterra.. Check out xterranation for some cool builds..

Ps 2013-2014 Xterra is built in canton ms now... The Tennessee plant no longer builds body on frame trucks..

I have owned 3 Xterras and lived every minute of them.

I test drove both of them. The main reason I am going with a T4R and not the X is because the T4R is so much bigger on the inside than the X. To me, sitting in the X is a mix of being in a JKU and an FJC. From the outside it looks like it could be a nice rig with lots of room but then you get inside and you are cramped up (at least I was). That was a big deal breaker for me...I'm a big dude and need space!

The price is what originaly made me look at an X. I could go to a dealer and get a fully decked out X for the same price I could get a 2010 4Runner with 40k on the clock.

Oh and the 4Runner just looks way sexier than the X.

Edit: Ok so clearly I didnt read the whole thread. Congrats on the new purchase! Sorry if I missed it but what color did you go with? Did you get the Pro-4x? My moms Titan is a PRO-4X model and I have used the rear locker many times. Me likey!

I went with a white 2014 Xterra S.

After weighing the pros and cons of the Pro-4x package, I realized the only feature that would have been of use to me is the rear locker (which is obviously not worth $3000 on it's own).

I think the S is the best value if you are going to do your own upgrades. The $3k upgrade for the Pro-4x package buys a real suspension lift, a set of 255/85 KM2s, an ARB rear locker, and some rock sliders.

EDIT: for the record, I agree that the driver's cockpit is a little snug. It is okay for me but I could not have any less room and still be comfortable. If I was 2" taller or 20lbs heavier I would probably have had some issues (I am 6'/210)

I dont understand this at all. The only place the 4runner has more space is in the trunk and its a trade off with wheel base and maneuverability. Not saying its not worth it but just a trade off.

The xterra is way more accomdating for a driver with a rear facing child seat behind them. Im 6'2" 230 and the seat position I set for comfort is the same with the car seat behind me. when I put the car seat behind me in the t4r, my knees were up my nose.

The only thing, imo, the t4r has over the pro4x is a higher msrp, fanboi following, and presumed status. Its incredibly over priced for what you get, and no more capable.

I dont know any specific measurements to compare the size...I first test drove the X and then went to a T4R within the same hour. The first thing I noticed in the T4R was more space. It may have just been a visual thing but thats how I felt. It just felt like there was more room for me.

As far as the room behind the driver seat...right now thats not a concern for me at all. I mostly drive alone but when I have someone else in the car its usually my gf. Hopefully I dont have to worry about car seat space for at least 6 more years...

When I was looking I was really focused on Toyota, specially the Taco with the TRD offroad package. The Toyota dealer jerked us around and lied to us so I went with the Xterra Pro4x, I got year end pricing so walked away at 27K. Is the xterra everything I wanted...no but the Toyota wasn't either :)

But, besides space, the Xterra is pretty close and a great platform to start from. I plan on keeping it as long as possible (kept my disco 8 years :-( ) so resale is not a major concern.

The biggest negatives are the independent front suspension (loved the Disco solid axles) and the soft springs. I will be placing the springs with OME springs this month so that issue will go away. The one thing I did not like about the Toyotas (except for the FJ which had other negatives) was their steering seemed less precise (IMHO) than the Xterra.

The space issue, well you have to get a bit more creative....I am talking to a fellow about producing a Hannibal type rack for it so that will solve some space concerns. Also since I don't have to carry half my garage in tools and spares (like in the Disco) I found that I have close to the same amount of space.

Anyway good luck with your new purchase!!! It's ok to be different

My wife drives a 2010 4Runner. It is the first year of the new body style. My daughter drivers an older Xterra that I bought her to drive to school. Both have been flawless. The 4runner does have a more "roomy" feel to it, while the X seems more sporty. I like them both a lot better than my Chevy Truck!
