Kodiak Buckaroo
Bumper sticks out about 8” behind the box
My HPI rear box I just ordered will be 6” deep off the back and hold my recovery gear and such and still give me 2” to bumper and keep everything at 23’9”
How high up the back of your cabin will the box go? Full height, or ? And is it the full width, or ? I don't remember if you have a window back there?

Hahaha! Hadn't seen that BagO'Barks before, thanks for sending. Working on the rear seat dog area (will need a custom platform, customize 2 new soft crates), waiting for Buckstop to finish the new front bumper(but that's ok as I still need to install the new Ford XL grille and TRS LED headlights first), trying to schedule Eaton front e-locker and 4.88s with JustDiffs in easternWA, Hwy Products has put one of their top engineers on my flatbed/boxes since there are enough little details to the project (June build), waiting to hear from ATO on their finishing their 2nd camper in order to give official pricing/options, placed an order for the Carli susp(arrival probably next year)....rig won't have stg1 completed until later this year...
I almost placed an order for the Aterra too. Our set-ups would have been damn near the same if I did. I switched to the OVE HBE instead. Already have the pallet of Carli goodness waiting for my truck to show up in the next few weeks. And camper to follow end of May. What Carli parts were you not able to get? I have an account with a supplier and can check stock as I managed to get everything minus the radius arms and the sway bar which should be soon.

Its not that I hate them... persay..

I know 3 different people that have cracked them, and one of them cracked 2 of them. Yes, the “HD” ones

Just looking out for your safety boo ?

@danneskjold care to chime in?

XOXO.
_bringles said he cracked 1(not 2 as you mentioned long ago) non-HD on the Dempster. No idea if he hit something or not. Method looked at pics and decided that the wheel took an impact, offered him one at a discounted rate.
Perhaps the HD's are more brittle than non-HD?

Why the 10" crossbox/tunnel? I figured you would be trying to keep it as short as possible as you had to go to a crewcab, so every inch in length counts? Just for more storage, or so everything lines up correctly? What are you figuring for overall length, right around 24 feet, depending on the length the front bumper adds?

View attachment 649518

Less than 23'OAL, probably 22' and change.
Just for more storage. Yes...could be for gear, or 4 4gal Rotopax for petrol (although still need to investigate the Titan 55gal diesel tank for my truck, see if it'll behave with petrol instead). Also, if we push the camper back a bit via the tunnel box, then we can probably have a bit of roof for a roof rack for 2 Aluboxes.

That rendering is awesome @mog

Great work!

Im hoping he adds a real rear bumper to protect the box in the event of a rear end collision, or backing into trees and whatever on the trail.

Having just fiberglass the rearmost portion of your setup is no bueno for a host of reasons

My overall length is 23’9” from which hook to tail light.

I’m betting his will be around 23’

Talking in 3rd person now eh? Teehee.
No plans on anything other than the HPI rear apron. What did you have on your Tundra?

Well.. yeah, If you’re rear ended by the average sedan that’d be safe. But anything else and the camper takes the hit.

I also wanted the bumper the furthest thing in the rear for trail duty too backing up and or down trails or turning around.

Trees and rocks like to jump out at you...

I tend to go down trails I probably shouldn’t and probably back up and turn around more than most so maybe it’s more of a concern for me. ??‍♂️

Show us a from-the-rear of yer azz Kevbo!

Awesome! Awhile back we got very very close to ordering a FWC Hawk flatbed. Then had an ATO topper on order, but after more experiences in pop tops, we were done; had to go hardwall. What made you switch from Aterra to HBE?
Carli is very backlogged on the King's, and their new radius arms are 1yr out! Going with the full Pintop, every option. Thx for the offer to check stock, I ordered directly from Dan at Carli since I'd been chatting with him about the new 6.2L setups for a long time.

Ahh, I figured I would give them time to shake down a new unit and I wanted something with a little more clearance. I like the looks and idea of it for sure. The OVE stuff seems solid and I really like their flat bed as well. I'm doing this full pin top kit as well, just gonna put the radius arms and sway bar on as they come available. Everything else I have sitting on pallet waiting for the truck to show up. I went with the 7.3 gas motor on a crew cab short bed chassis.

On my Tundra, i built the bumper/tire carrier to protect/protrude a few inches off the rear of the camper.

On the ram, i designed it to protrude a lot more (its about 9") since i will have a 7" deep box on the rear, so still the rearmost thing on my setup will be a huge steel bumper to protect the box.

The rear of my box, sits right at the rear of the subframe shown here, and the bumper is, well... its just there... :)

Your RAM bumper is very nice Kevbo.
I hear ya on having a rear bumper so that the camper is less prone to getting whacked in a rear end collision. However, Highway Products doesn't really offer such for their custom flatbeds, they just have their rear apron (that houses the taillights). I will ask my HPI guy though...
Flatbeds, some with apron framework that sticks back, some with 2 little steps that protrude; https://www.highwayproducts.com/c/custom-flatbeds/
Service bodies have more of a bumper possibility, like the pink Ford; https://www.highwayproducts.com/c/custom-service-bodies/

Official build thread to come soon...

Thanks. Yeah, i look at a nice solid rear bumper as basically mandatory really.

Thats a slick design, but also the weirdest hitch setup i've ever seen in my life! Woh
