235/85-16 on Rubicon wheels?

Am I asking for trouble running a tire this narrow on my stock Rubicon wheels? Does anyone know if they are 16x8 or 16x7?

What year Rubicon? 2006 and older were 8", and too wide for a 235/85R16.

Edit - Reading your signature looks like you have a 2005? A 265/75 would fit the wheels much better.

Yeah, it's an '05. Bummer, I kinda liked the idea of running the skinnies. Maybe I'll have to spring for the 7" steelies.

I looked at your Jeep page and see you have 285s. If you have room for 285s you will have more room for 255s. The Cooper ST and Dean SXT have a slightly wider casing than a 235/85 (being a 255) but a very narrow tread of only 7.2 inches.

Many 235/85R16 have about a 7-inch wide tread, so at 7.2 you will certainly be running a skinny tire, but you can use your 8" wheels. I ran the Dean SXTs on my 05 Rubicon using the stock 8" wheels a few years ago without issue (and currently have a set of Cooper STs for my Toyota).

Going from a 285 down to a 235/85 is quite a change, what’s the motivation?

I think the 285's are too big. They look "stuffed" to me. I don't want to lift it any higher and don't want to re-gear. The 265's would probably work fine but I kinda like the idea of the skinny tire. I have yet to find any pictures of a TJ/LJ with 235/85's though. I've read all the threads here on them. Do you think it would look weird?

No I don't think it will look funny but I like narrow tires, you have to like or get accustomed to the look.

A few years ago when I was on the Rubicon Owners' Forum there was a guy running 235s without a lift (on different/narrower wheels). Maybe a search there will turn up some pics?

You know, tonight I'm considering going down to 265s from 255s as there are so many more treads to choose from (I would still have some 255s as well). If I do, there is a chance I would quickly think that 265s were too short from my 4Runner so maybe you would like to buy them from me barely used and cheap :sombrero:

Yep, you should definitely try the 265s, and then let us know what you think. :D I either need to move down to 265 or re-gear on the Trooper.

CA-RJ - 235's look great on a Rubicon, but I think they are too narrow for a 7" rim. I'm running 235 snow tires on a 7" rim and they are fine on road, but I'm not sure I would feel comfortable airing them down off road below about 25 psi.

Here are a couple shots of 235 MTRs on a Jeep (not my photos or Jeep):

Well, I have run a few sets 265s before. Never for long because I'm both fickle and I don't care for such a 'short' tire. Ground clearance on the low riding 4Runner was part of the issue but also ascetics, as my rigs certainly look better with 255/85s.

My 255s are great, the only reason I'm even considering 265s is because I was considering 285s - but was finding my way back to my previous opinion that 285s are too wide for me.

Regarding 235s: It's been a long time since I ran the stock 235/85R16 size tires on the stock 7-inch Ford F350 wheels, but seem to remember they were okay. I think if you keep airing down to 15-20 PSI you should be alright depending on the tire. I think it will be difficult to find a proper/nice wheel narrower than 7-inches. Even 7-inch wheels can be tough but maybe a stock Cherokee wheel fits?
