250 lb rack mods

Just bought a 96 GMC Safari van plan to set up my Tepui RTT on the van. I have been studying the vans as I have time and the general consensus is the Safari roof is not that strong.
I was hoping I could add a couple cross bars and put the tent on those but now I second guess that. Maybe add a basket then some outriggers on the basket close to the edge of the roof and have some rubber or plastic feet help spread the load? I am all for a custom overbuilt HD roof rack but that will take time. I'm anxious to get camping right away! :)
Thoughts welcome!

Not sure if he is on here but I know he is on astro safari dot com. Register there and talk with 97cargocrawler about his rack set up/weights/etc.

Why not just sleep inside the van?

Good question, it will happen from time to time. I just want a small amount of open space in the van due to Western Washington weather. So I plan on leaving one (maybe 2) middle bucket seats in the van. Also might have more people than the van alone can sleep.
