Arctic Trucks Toyota expedition to South Pole

Interesting that Arctic Trucks offers conversion/upgrade programs for both the HiLux and the Tacoma model lines. I thought Tacomas were sold only in USA and Canada. I guess they make it to Iceland as well.

Another Antarctic "drive to the pole" was made by a 2005 British expedition, driving Ford Econoline vans prepared by IceCool, another Icelandic 4x4 company.

The 6x6 van is no off-road-only trailer queen. The man behind Ice Cool, Gunnar Egillsen, shipped the vans from Iceland to Buenos Aires, and then drove the vans on public roads about 2400 miles south through Patagonia and across the Andes to Punta Arenas, Chile. The van was shipped to Antarctica from Punta Arenas.

Here's the van near the famous Cordillera del Paine in Chile.

Arctic Trucks was the company that prepared the vehicles used in the run to the magnetic north pole in Greenland, sponsored by the British TV show, "Top Gear." The Arctic Trucks web site is here http://www.arctictrucks.com/

This ought to work a tad better than the The Snow Cruiser of the 1930s, a rig that was too big for its britches... er, tires. It drove a short distance and got permanently stuck, 'til it fell through the ice sheet to the bottom of the ocean a couple of decades later.

Awesome.

Reminds me of Top Gear's trip to the North Pole against a dog sled team w/a Toyota HiLux. Someone else can probly post a link. there's a thread in here somewhere about it. Good stuff!!

Arctic Trucks built the Hilux for both the North & South Pole trips.

FWIW, Artic Trucks converted vehicles come with a full Toyota warranty in Iceland...

By the way, what's currently the best tyre for driving on snow in these and similar conditions? 37"+ and if possible on a 16" wheel.

So long,

Robert

I do know that Arctic Trucks has their own line of tires for just that.

I've also seen a lot of people running Super Swamper STS tires. I know that they can be had in wide sizes, and the tread pattern isn't as aggressive as a M/T.

Some run wheels that are actually wider than the tire, so as to maximize the contact area of the tire.
