ive got a chance at a free set of 285/75 all terrains from my cousin that i need to decide on. the truck is an 04 taco dc with the 3.4, auto, stock 4.10 gears. i dont have the money to regear right now so im not too sure about the power loss with that size tire. im running 235/85 right now. the power loss, while noticeable, is at least acceptable. 285/75 is an inch taller and wider.

anyone have any comments??

I'm running 285/75R16's on my 05 2.7, with stock 4.10's, so i don't know how helpful this will really be, but the powerloss is noticeable, but i drive my truck like a truck, and it doesn't bother me at all.

im running 285/75r16 in my 3.4L 4runner with stock 4.10's. its not too bad, you really get used to it. reason i kept it like that is for long highway stints, its great. 65 is about 1800-1900 rpm. great highway mileage, but in town its trash and i find myself using 4lo ALOT more than i probably should just for the torque.

Put on the tires and you'll talk yourself into them. You'll be happy with the tires performance off road. Still ,you'll try to convince yourself that the lugging and decreased gas mileage is something you can live with; that whole powerband thing is over-blown.

Then, over time, you will become increasingly dissatisfied. Eventually you'll encounter enough situations on and off road where it will become apparent that you really need to regear. After you finally do it you chastise yourself for not doing it sooner. Ask me how I know...

I just switched from 265/75's to 285/75's. I was worried much the way you are, but it's not that big of a deal. There is a slight power loss, but nothing too bad with the V6. I drive a stick, but I have a buddy who has an auto with the same size tires, and he doesn't have a problem with them either. Both of us drive our trucks like they are rentals.
