2M antenna mounts

Hi,

Will be taking my Tech test next month. I'm wondering about places to mount an antenna. Aside from the roof being the best ground plane, I was wondering if anyone has mounted to a roof rack, and building some type of ground plane or ground straps. I have a Yakima system, on an ARE canopy. I'm thinking of the roof, but am looking into alternatives before I drill a hole. I have an ARB bumper and was wondering what type of SWR reading you will get on mounting the antenna on one of the tabs at the top of the hoop. Probably not optimal I am thinking.

I am going to have a CB also, but I don't think that is as critical.

Thanks

I have a Diamond SG7900A on my roof rack. Most of the Diamond mobile antennas do not require a ground plane, so you can mount them anywhere you want. Here is a list of their antennas: http://www.rfparts.com/diamond/Product_Catalog/mobile.html
Except for the NMO and some of the magnet mount's, none of them should require a ground plane.

P.S. Good luck on your test! I take mine next month.

Thanks for the info Clark. Good luck on your test also!
