Well, I'm just a few call letters away from being official. I went in and took the test this morning and passed the Technician test; I then followed that up with taking the General test which I failed by a margin of 5 questions. I felt pretty good about the whole experience overall. I realy hadn't studied too much for the General, but I figured I would give it a go because it didn't cost any more to give it a try.

They said that they would submit the paperwork via email today and that we should have call signs by Tuesday or Wednesday. Can't wait. they also mentione that untill then we could be on the air with I think a temporary ID of "dash A G". if someone knows for sure please correct me.

Now the fun begins!

Congratulations on passing the test. You are gonna love it. As a technician, you cannot get on the air until your call sign appears on the FCC database. When you upgrade to general class, you can get on the air on HF immediately after passing the general test by using the "temporary AG" (amateur general)after your call sign. Once your upgrade appears on the FCC database, you can drop the "temporary AG".

Last Tuesday the FCC listed my callsign in the database so I am now officially KE7ZYM and on the air. I checked into the local R.A.C.E.S net last Thursday and although I was able to communicate I was told that the transmission was a little muffled. So, to try and get some better performance out of this little HT I ordered the following from Hamcity yesterday:

MH-57A4B Yaesu Microphone Speaker Handheld
SRH77CA Diamond Antenna Handheld 144/440 SMA
E-DC-6 Yaesu 12V Cable Plug & Wire DC

From what i have read the VX-170 has a membrane over the microphone for waterproofing that can have a negative affect on the sound quality of the transmitted message. it seems like a lot of the guys get the hand held speaker-mike and make sure that it doesn't have a similar cover over the mike. I figured that while I was buying goodies i would upgrade the antenna as well as getting a charging/power cable to put into the truck.

Now I just need to hurry up and wait. Hopefully it gets here before Thursday night.

Mike

(I think I'm getting hooked on HAM)
