2wd to 4wd xterra conversion?

Odd question...I am original owner of a 2003 xterra se. At the time I bought it I had no vision for taking it off road. As a 2wd it has gotten us stuck on some of the lamest places. It is in great shape and paid off. Is it possible to convert to 4wd? If not...what about simply adding a rear locker? I mean this thing is terrible as 2wd....stck on a forrest service road on a dry day turning around.....

It can be done. I did it on my 04 frontier (same drivetrain). You will need a new transmission or the rear housing of a 4wd trans and a new mainshaft. ( i scored a trans off ebay for 450 shipped with about 40k on it) Then you will need a transfercase, front differential, front crossmember, outer knuckles/spindles, cv shafts, and t-case shifter. It all bolts in. Checkout all the online nissan forums for people doing a sas and you can usually pick up all the front end parts for less than 400 plus shipping. with some patience looking on the internet i'm sure you could do the whole swap for less than 1500. The rear locker alone is $1,000, ARB is the only person that makes one for your axle. With the rear locker alone you will be quite capable but things like deep sand will still get you stuck where factory 4wd would carry you through. Personally i think the rear locker would be the least amount of work. Then get a good front bumper and a winch and you will be able to get to most rural spots without issue.

I'm in the same boat with my Fronty. I didn't catch where you are, but that makes a huge difference. Out here in the dust I don't have to worry about mud and snow, so a little patients and my factory limit slip gets us to allot of fun places. If wet is a problem just sell it and buy a 4x4. Yeah, you could find someone doing a solid axle swap and maybe get their old parts cheap. You would need a transmission too if you have a manual. Not sure if the slush boxes are the same...

Thanks guys....think I will keep it for wifes dailydriver and look for a 4x4 to build as an expo only rig. Love my 2003 se, so will probably loom for same year and in the se version....only in 4x4.
