Engine and transmission are both solid...but even the most robust drive train can be destroyed by poor maintenance.

Rust? Ummm...well, I'd check the metal before the plastic. ;) Look the frame rails over.

Google the fuel economy...you may have to convert from mpg to lpk. Looks like about 14-15 mpg city, 18-20 mpg highway.

Good luck!

Hi,

Look at the Frame, the problem here with all the salt on the streets is the Frame.

There a lot of Monteros ( Pajeros here) from Gen. 2 and 2.5 died on this.
Take a Hammer and a Stetoskope and a good Flashlight when you look to an offer.

Fuelconsumption changes with driving, when you go on a Highway with 100KM/h the 3.5 with the original 265/75 15 will go for 10.5 Liters per 100KM.

With 235/85 16 an 2.5" Lift and a Roofrack it takes 12 Liters.

Running with 140KM/h it takes 16-17 Litres and think about 18+ in Town when you like the Sound of the V6.

Look for a clear History, Timingbelt, Sparkplugs and Oilchange ( also the AT) need to be changed in time.

If you found a good Modell be happy and feed it well:sombrero:

The government posts the EPA numbers. They are usually pretty accurate.

Myself, and 3 other Gen2 Montero owners being tracked on Fuelly are all very close to each other's numbers. I'm averaging 15.3 mpg in mine.

Out of all of the Gen3's on Fuelly, the average is still in the same range - 15 to 17 mpg (9 different vehicles averages, combined).

That would be 15.6 - 13.8 L per 100 KM, and represents real world numbers (not ideals or anomalies). While it might be technically possible to get 10.5 L per 100 KM on the highway in a specific scenario (driving exactly 62km/h, flat ground, no wind, empty vehicle, full tire pressure, good alignment, perfectly tuned engine, etc etc etc), your tank averages aren't going to be that high unless you live on the freeway on-ramp and do absolutely no stop-and-go or city driving.
