Allpar.com is an FCA vehicle fan site with sources inside the company. For many months, Allpar and other sites have been speculating about what will replace the Pentastar minivan V6 used in current Jeep and other FCA brands. The most likely replacement is a turbocharged four cylinder gasoline engine, a design that will be used in many FCA brands worldwide.

Allpar's update on the subject says the four cylinder will be 2.0L, and be offered in two states of tune. The engine for the Wrangler is expected to produce 300 hp.

New to the speculative report is a turbocharged six cylinder designed to replace the 5.7L V8 in the Grand Cherokee and Ram pickups. This engine may eventually appear in some Wrangler models, including the pickup variant. The 5.7L V8 produces 400 hp in these vehicles, so I expect the new turbo six to produce a little more hp. Hopefully the six will also pump out 400+ ft lb of torque, matching the torque of the 5.7L V8.

The inline 6 is reported to be only a little longer than the four cylinder. Maybe this is why in spy photos the new Wrangler looks to have a hood that's a little longer than the current model.

Hard to imagine how an inline 6 would be only slightly longer than an inline 4...

I will be shocked if they do it for crash safety reasons, but who knows.

I though the consensus was the hood and cowl are longer on the JL because of the 8 speed auto?

They use straight 6's in new BMWs. IDK details, i just like the idea.

It all depends on how they designed the motor. Didn't Honda put out a transverse I6 bike? Not that it would be any good in a Jeep but you can stuff about anything in a Jeep depending on how much work you want to do. An Allison V12 in a MB Jeep? The driver would be sitting in the back seat and screaming as he tried to drive the thing.
They did it. I suppose they only exist in photos for a reason.

The turbo 4 cylinder could be a good thing, since there "should" be plenty of room in the engine bay.
I've been following the progression of the Eco-Boost engines, and have to say they are very impressive, both in economy, and in the low rpm power. If this engine is designed in that character, it could be a great engine for the Wrangler.
Would be awesome to have room for an on-board welder, and belt driven compressor. Between the two, there isn't much trail damage that can't be repaired. :)

Not sure how I'd feel about an inline 6 cylinder. Turbo 4 weighs less. Off road the mantra is "light is right" (as long as we aren't talking beer ;)). Also the turbo 4 won't be as affected by altitude.

I guess I must be as the quote from generation is " there is no replacement for cubic inches" or something. so how much ci or liters would a four cylinder turbo displace?

Did I just hear straight 6? Ohhhhhhhh yesssss......now THAT gets me excited. I may be in the minority, but I like that they're bringing back the 4 banger. SWB Jeeps have always had a 4 banger until the JKs.....personally I would chose the straight 6 over a 4 banger all day long but I like that they offer it. Traditions and stuffs. Seriously though, if they pump out a straight 6 and it's good.....

Keep or Tacoma, I've always heard there's no replacement for displacement. We Americans love gigantic motors. It just makes us happy :)
