33" vs 35" JK sahara

what would be a better choice for expedition travel. most of the driving will be on dirt roads/ highway and some fire roads to remote campsites. im worried about the poor 3.8 motor being able to move the 35"s when fully loaded. and i would like to keep as much of the ride as close to stock as possible.

33"s i would go with the teraflex leveling kit
35"s i would go with the teraflex 2.5" lift kit

and a pic of the jeep.

:sombrero: I second the 33", they're all you need, but

The leveling kit is not enough for REAL 33" tires, too much rubbing

You would need the 2.5 " lift by either RC or Teraflex and either new shocks or shock extensions

thanks for the info and input guys. i guess also after bumpers and winch i would be happier with the lift anyway.

:sombrero: well, I said "real "33" tires, Most metric 285x70/16" (or17"/18") tires end up at about 32" when installed on our JK's

My tires are Hankook LT295/75x16 Dynapro M/T-and they are listed as 33.6" tall and 15" wheels won't work, unless they have at least 3.75" backspace

Installed on my JK they are 33.2" at 28psi, which is where I run them to and fro

Without the lift they would not clear the bumpers and without Spidertrax 1.5" adapters, they won't clear the sway bar on full turns and thats with ProComp 16x8" 8089's with 4.5" backspace

I also have extended bumpstops front/rear

awesome thanks for the info once again. what was the best price you have found on the dynapros? and what mileage are you looking at getting out of them. i have read everything from 25,000 to 60,000 miles.

and your jeep is amazing and love the trailer too. do you have a build thread on here or jko?

I bought the Hankooks (5), mounted and balanced from a guy in Boulder Colorado, for $1300 bucks SHIPPED to my place in California, but I've seen them for$170/ea-base price(just tires)

I think you have to check tirediscount.com !!!

I don't have any idea how many miles I'll get, I keep the jeep in My house in North Nevada and only use it for off-road fishing/camping/snow/exploring, so I'll probably get at least 3 years use, before going to maybe 34", but a strong maybe

They are a little higher pitched hiwy whine, than the stock BFG KM's that came with the Rubi and now after all the mods, drives and handles better than it ever did, OH, I've also got RC9000XL shocks (adj) and they're set at #5
So I'm kinda dialing them in, they're not to rough at #5, but are very controlling !!

Good luck

This is my Sahara with 16x8 Procomp 1059s (4.5" backspacing) and 255/85-16 BFG KM2 tires. They measure a little over 33" and only weigh 54 pounds; wheels are 22 pounds.
With weight on a JK, also consider the brakes; rear brakes wear out fast due to the BLDs and other electronic gizmos.

I've got springs from an Unlimited tow package and a 2.5" Teraflex puck lift with shocks and other stuff. Bumpers, winch, synthetic line.

More bump steer with the older tires; harsher over washboard. The 285/75-16 MTR/kevlars weighed 66 pounds each.

i think the 33" should do. on the 4dr i prefer the 35"s because the loooong wheel base.
i don't know about the v6 but the diesel with 4.10 gearing has plenty of torque to turn 35"s. braking is pretty good as well.

and a pic so you get the idea...

:sombrero: Well the (now) availability of choices for 16" tires is endless, still a little vague for 17/18" tires !!

The stock 17" wheels have a 6"++ backspace--too restrictive

What made you guys jump from the stock 17" wheels to 16" wheels?

I'll stay away from 35" tires, to many potential suspension failures and nowhere near enough V6 power and a little to tough on freeway/mileage, without gear chg--too much work involved, I'm happier with the big 33" and have no use for anything bigger

I am going to disagree with most people and say go with a 35" tire. With a 33" tire on a 4 door you really aren't helping your breakover angle which is the weakest link in the JK. Also with a 35" tire and a properly calibrated speedo it really isn't that bad.

Many people make it sound like the JK is a dog with stock gears and 35" tires, and you aren't going to win any races, but you will be able to go with the flow of traffic just as much as with a 33" tire. With the JK all the drivetrain week links that people talk about with a 35" tire are there with a stock tire also. The u-joints on the front axles tend to have the caps come off, and elongate and break the axle no matter what tire size you run. The axle tends to bend with a stock tire as much as with a 35" tire. The other weak link is the swing gate. Certian 33" tire will start to break spot welds and require a tire carrier just like a 35" tire.
