Harbor Freight Gas Impact Wrench on Sale

That is a good price.
I paid that much or more for my Craftsman HD impact wrench several years ago.

That would be a good item for those who do not carry a HD air compressor or Powertank in their rigs.

I am very sure my 3' pipe on the end of my breaker bar has just as much torque cost less and packs down smaller. That being said a Taco only requires about 85 inch pounds for lug nuts. Maybe big trucks require more but not 400 inch pounds +.

Fuso's require 395 ft lbs. My Bluebird Wanderlodge requires 450 ft lbs. I'm sure there are expedition trucks that require similar torque.

This post explains quite graphically why someone who owns an FG might find a gas impact wrench attractive:

Given our discussion about tight lug nuts this is a very useful tool mentioned in an earlier thread and used by one of our Aussie members. IT IS ON SALE FOR $87. Normal price is about $400.

Looks cumbersome, but I can see where it would be handy.

450 is about the limit for a tire lug nut.

I've bounced on a pipe like that, but then I own lots of farm equipment. I had an 6' pipe on a lug nut. I was standing on the end bouncing before it moved. Some bounces the rim would turn so I jambed a pipe into it to keep it from turning.

On air impact wrenches. You NEED a good air source for them to work up to full rating. I have never seen a 12VDC air compressor that was up to the task.

You can also get torque multiplier wrenches. Usually they come in 4x to 16x multiplying ratios and cost at a minimum of a few hundred dollars. You need to brace their reaction handle against something solid as that handle has full force present on it. Usually they are setup to be driven by a regular wrench like this one is. Some times they have their own wrench handle.

Agreed. It is probably cumbersome to use. But then again my 1" air impact is not an easy tool to use either.
I would think farmers/ranchers would find a gas impact wrench quite useful, espcially at $87.

I have no need for this. But, I want one! It's way cool in a Road Warrior / Mad Max kind of way. :Wow1:

Just walk away. I will give you safe passage in the Wasteland. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror. I await your answer. You have one full day to decide.

Oh Man!

What I wouldn't have given for this thing one day on a chicken bus road high in the Peruvian Andes!

And I'm not kidding about the chicken bus on that road. This is one of the many that passed by while I was changing those two flats on the left rear. Check out what is tied to the roof.

Thats a bargain! I paid $250us plus shipping direct from factory, so they are losing money on that deal, they certainly work fantastic, the only negative thing is they are heavy, but once located on the studs or nuts no problem.

What about keeping up the gas engine? Low use gas engines tend to get problematic after awhile. It will need to be run every so often, and need gas. I mostly use diesel on the farm.

Agreed again. I'd never leave fuel in it. But it's all a trade off. If you need a tool like this, then the only feasible alternative is a 1" air impact which will require an expensive 220volt compressor and the associated large air lines. It's biggest advantage being useability where there is no electricity. For me, it can deal with the lug nuts on my Fuso and Wanderlodge and the price is even cheaper than the 1" air impact I bought thinking I might bet enough oomph out of my small compressor.

By the way, it looks like railroad workers use these kinds of impact wrenches:

What about torque multiplier wrenches? Not hard to find one that will output 1000 to 2000 ft lbs of torque.
