I personally would not put a 35 incher on the stock carrier. I am still running 32's and plan to go to a 33 x 12.50 but I am still going to get a bumper and tire carrier.

I have a friend that I work with and he has an unlimited 4 door with 35's on the stock carrier and he has had nothing but problems with his gate. He lost the tire once while going down the highway when the carrier broke in half. He does not even wheel his, his wife drives it most of the time. Good luck

:sombrero: I've got/have a 33" Hankook Dynapro on my STOCK tailgate mount and it's been sucessful

I' wouldn't recommend carrying a 35" though, weight/size/3rd brake light

The stock spare tire carrier will support 33" tires/wheels as long as they are under 80 lbs and PROPER BUMPSTOPS are used (aftermkt wheels)

While I have no experence with a JK carrier I can tell you that the stock carrier on my YJ started sag and rip the skin of the tailgate with just a 31' mounted. The rubber bumpers were properly spaced too. The tailgate had a hard time closing and rattled like crazy. A new tailgate and bumper mounted tire carrier wolved the problem.

And I know that on my friends TJ the studs ripped right out of the carrier and he lost the spare on the freeway. However he had a 35 on there and did not space the rubber bumpers to meet the tire.

Just my $.02

Had a 33x12.50 on a stock carrier on an 06 LJ for a short time and when I was wheeling it started cracking the tailgate. Pulled it off and put on an OR-FAB full rear rack and had no more problems!!

Its simply not worth damaging your rig.

There is no cheap way of running 35's and a good bumper with tire carrier is just part of the cost of doing business.

I wouldn't put a 35 spare on the stocker carrier on a street queen, forget an actual rig that wheels.

If you decide to do it I have a relocation bracket for the mount and the third brake light you can have for $40 shipped CONUS. I think it's smittybilt brand. You need the relocation bracket for a 35" tire

I know lots of people that do it, even seen 37's, but I've also seen stock mounts broke off under the weight of stock wheel/tires....then again who hasn't seen a broken swing out tire carrier???

Get an H2 swing-out spare tire carrier. Sturdier than any of the aftermarket bumpers I've seen.
(got one for sale if you're interested)

I had a 35" tire and a small rack on a swing out mounted to the bumper (spindle) and tub (upper hinger point and latch point on opposite side). The tub literally cracked apart at the latch point, and was starting to at the upper hinge point.

THe fix was to fab up a reinforcing plate inside the tub where the latch was, and another on the hinge side, that tied back to the roll cage. This effectively transfer all the load to the strongest parts of the frame, and NOT the tub.

i thought of building a braket that mounts to the stock tire carrier bolts and the hinge bolts. that should distribute the weight. besttop had it for TJs.
what do you all think?

my 35" spare sits on the stock carrier pretty far from the stops (about 2") i'd have to lengthen them in order to make them work.

The stock mount (YJ,TJ,JK) has the tire kind of low. It's good for visiblity but I was running a 35 spare on my mine and dropped off a ledge. I severly bent (destroyed) the tailgate and broke out the rear glass. I now have a high mounted swingout and have no had any similar problems.

well, i like the idea of keeping it on the gate as it's one more thing to open it on a swing-out.
with the stroller going in and out a lot, that would be a hassle.

i'd think the best top idea should work, no?
like here:

i don't quite understand how this should help the problem...
