4.56 gears in a 2006 1500

I am saving for a gear swap, the ridiculously tall 3.55 gears are not cutting it. I read on several sites that the housing must be ground to fit 4.56 gears in the 2006 Ram 1500 front and rear housings. Can anybody confirm or dispel this information? Those that have done the swap with a 4.7L engine, what kind of gains did you see for mileage and off road performance? Man do I miss my Power Wagon.

While I can't speak for the particulars of the Dodge, I went from 3.55 gears to 4.56 gears in my Explorer. Mileage didn't take enough of a hit to worry about. With 33s (stock is 29), I'm basically equivalent to stock tires with the optional 4.10 gears.

Offroad it's great. They climb well and in 4lo and 1st gear, going downhill at a creep is usually done with the throttle and not the brakes.

Thanks for the reply. Dodge has a tall. 68 overdrive and I will be running taller tires so I am still strongly considering the swap.
