4 door Long bed???

Quick question

I'm looking for a 4 door tacoma, but I want one with the long bed. How can I quickly determine bed length on Craigslist or Auto trader. Even with the pictures it's tough to see. Is there an identifier in the VIN that shows long vs short bed. It seems most I see are short beds.

Thanks!

Well if you're looking at pre-'05 Taco's, they are all short beds. If it's an '05 and up you can easily tell the difference. Look at the where the rear fender flare starts in relation to the cab/bed gap. Long beds have about a foot of extra length here. Google up some pics of both and give 'em a look. You'll see.

That does help. So it's the extra length is at the front of the bed not behind the wheel well. Are there some options that would exclude a long bed? That might help me sort a little more. Transmission? Engine? TRD suspension?
Also is the TRD sport edition worth the premium for expo use? I'll probably be replacing the suspension any way.

Not to start a Nissan vs. Toyota discussion but the newer Frontiers also come in crew cab long bed, since 08 I believe.

The sport version gets you a rear limited slip differential, street tuned shocks, and 17" wheels. I think the TRD off road package is much more useful, you get a electronic rear locker and more off road friendly (and cheaper) 16" wheels.

On second though, I am not sure the TRD off road package is available on long bed models? Not 100% sure. My buddy has one, and its significantly larger than my T100, which is about the largest vehicle id really want to take on any technical off road trail.

The Off Road package with the e-locker is only available on short beds. But of course there is always ARB should you need both a long bed and a locker.

Long Bed can only come with the TRD Sport package, and not the TRD Off Road package. Most car dealers are not educated enough to tell the difference.

The 17" Wheels are worthless, and Craigs listed mine and was able to purchase a set of wheels from a TRD Off Road and not loose much money.

I travel with about 220 pounds of dog (Lab & Newfoundland) and needed the long bed.

If you're looking at the double (crew) cabs, the SB has the wheel well for the rear tires start almost immediately after the back of the cab. The long bed has about one foot of "body" before the wheel well starts.

The 4 door longbed (actually 6-foot bed... some aftermarket makers call 8ft a long bed, 6ft standard or short bed, and 5ft extra short, in case it wasn't confusing enough) only comes with V6 and automatic. No offroad package. You typically only see them in SR5 trim, so power everything + LSD rear.

Wheelbase is ~140 inches. It's very long for a trail vehicle and has real **** breakover angle. So for serious trails, you'll be raising it as much as possible (good thing you didn't spend extra on the OR package shocks you're going to throw away) and installing sliders and belly pans. The worst I've had to do with mine is drive backwards uphill on some tight switchbacks where there was no room to turn. But I drive mostly open trails in the desert - tight trails amongst trees is a different story.
