4 Runner vs. Tacoma Prices

I was looking for a Tacoma for my son when I noticed the 4Runners seem to be less expensive, is there a reason for this other than maybe supply and demand? I am looking for a 4 cylinder, 2 wheel drive, and automatic transmission and maybe late 90's and newer as long as it does not have a bunch of miles on it. Are there any years and or models to stay away from and defects to look for in the 4Runners or are they as bulletproof and run forever like the Tacomas?

less versatile I would guess. I found the same thing when I went shopping 5 years ago. Comparable vehicles would usually see the 4runner priced 1k less. Same reliability as the Tacoma's since they share most all the same drive train. You can Google the differences but there isn't much important variance on a 2wd from 96-02.

The Tacoma will get better gas milage in the form you described above. Even better with a 5spd but you should see 26mpg easily maybe more. I don't think even a 2wd 4runner will see that number. Just a lot more weight with the cab. As for prices...depends where you live. Both are expensive here in Northern NJ and usually rusty.

Very common problem. I wanted a double cab taco when I was shopping, but couldn't justify the cost vs the 4runner. Still want one, but I paid 7k for my 4runner (5speed, diff lock), and the taco's were going for 9-12k, and those had the auto.

I decided the money was better spent on mods.

The 4runners are the same as the taco's reliability wise, better if you count the frame recalls (I personally don't worry much about it). Its just that the tacoma's have a bed, and that appeals to lots of folks for work/play combo vehicles, at least out here.

Good luck with your search. Either platform will probably work well for you.

Cheers!

If he doesn't really need a pickup for hauling dirty stuff on a regular basis then a 4runner would be a better choice, in my opinion, because it can haul people and/or gear. 4 cylinder with auto may be a bit difficult to find, I don't know. Nothing really to look out for. The front suspension on these isn't the best, but should be fine for his needs.

Why? Its leaps and bounds better than the older stuff. I thought it was very similar to the new Taco's and 4Runners, aside from the lower ball joints, which replacing takes care of. Why do you feel it is "not the best"?

All 4runners 2wd or not is still a 4wd front suspension.
The taco has a 2wd and 4wd front suspension.
