40 Series Wheels

Anyone have preferences on 16" steel wheels? The Troopy has split rims and very few tire shops work on splits anymore.

5 lug and 3.75" backspacing, I think,

Truck or farm type shops should work on split rims....

However, I would also switch to none split rims.

Try looking at the different Land Cruiser vendors...

Specter has some, but they are expensive and only 15", split or chrome....

I can't find any on the Man-A-Fre site. I might give TLC a shout tomorrow.

What about the rims that come from the spare on a FJ Cruiser or Tacoma???? I think they are 16 x 7's???

15", 6 lug on 5.5", almost any Chevy truck rim should work.
I like the American racing white spoke rims. They were the rage back in the seventies. Very period for almost any LC IMHO.
I got a set of 5 for my 75 FJ40 from Less Schwab for $35 a copy.

Funny, I asked the Les Schwab dealer here if they would work on splits and they said it was not a problem at all. They dont do the "widow maker" splits that split in the center of the rim, but the OE Toyota ones were a cinch according to them.

Out of curiosity, who refused to work on them?

Factory 60 series wheels will work just fine. Anything over 3.75 inches of backspacing will rub the steering knuckle/tie rod of a troopy....I'm running Mr. Brady's "old" Mohave Teflon wheels 16x8 with 4" of backspacing, and am using a 1.5" Spidertrax spacer on the front....

Gary...If you can get to Flagstaff, or know of someone heading up to Colorado, I've got a set of 5 60 series chrome wheels (15x7) that'll work great...you can have 'em. Shipping would be more than just going down and buying some steelies....

The spacers are a little tough, you will probably notice some handling differences. My favorite approach to 16" and odd sized wheels and particularly with any lift at all is the backspacing approach. For some reason no one makes a 6x5.5 (the Toyota bolt pattern) wheel with less than 3.5" backspacing. With lifts it not only looks goofy but adds to off campber instability by having the OEM narrower track width.

8" wide wheels are perfect IMO for anything in a 12.5" width tire. 7" work too but is a hair narrow. You can also call Summit Racing and if the size you are looking for doesn't exist they can usually have it added. 2" backspacing is aobut the maximum width you can get.

The way back spacing and tire width works is backspacing is the distance from where the wheel attaches to the hub to the inner rim lip. From there, the wheel goes out whatever your rim width is. So 8" wide wheels stick out 1" farther than 7" wheels. Backspacing is a crucial measurement for interferance with tie rods etc, so it is important that it remains constant.

To add to what Mr. Dieselcruiserhead is saying, you can accidentally start playing with a little more backspacing with 16" wheels as they will cover the brakes more; as such you then need to account for the very likely tire tread rub on 40 series leaf springs.

With the stock overall diameter dire, 3.5" is the proper backspacing IMO for whatever sized wheel.
