In search of the perfect can opener.

I used that Amazon one last week on my trip, and I like it so much I may order one for the home kitchen too.

I bought a mini-Swing-Away at the Wal-mart in Flagstaff about 15 years ago for my camping gear box. It still works perfectly. Have a full sized one in the kitchen which is even older and still opening cans.

Th P-38s are great for backpacking, but they are a heck of a lot more tedious. Ditto for the one on my swiss army knife.

I've had a Kitchenaid for years... looks almost identical to the swing away. Does swing away produce the kitchenaid can openers?

The Swing-A-Way is now made in China. But I have picked up three at thrift stores not paying over $1.00 for any of them.

I also carry a P-38 on my key chain. I also generally have my SAK (Swiss Army Knife) Explorer in my pocket.

The Swing-A-Way is the easiest to use. The P-38 is the most compact. The SAK also has a very good can opener.

..The SAK also has a very good can opener.

I like the forward cutting (concave cutting edge) opening on SAK (Victorinox line). The other line, Wagner (I think that was the name) had a concave cutter (hook shape) that did not work as well.

Definitely Swing-A-Way. They're US-made (at a factory here in St Louis), work beautifully, and last forever. A fantastic value.

We are so in tune with our oveland mojo at Disabled Explorers that our can opener has the same name as our primary expedition vehicle...

Oh and I do use the can opener on it in the field always and usually at home also...it works very well.

P-38 all the way, you don't need nothing more.

Use it enough, and you can get a smooth edge on the cans you open with it.

here's one I picked up in Afghanistan. Not a traditional one as it is used to open AMMO cans but it works well none the less.

I've designed my own can opener, and am currently interviewing local fabrication shops to find one qualified to make it. I want an individual artisan, self-taught, who has personally driven the length of the Americas, so that he (or she) will know what makes a superior can opener.

Also, I'm having trouble sourcing the titanium.

When we get the first unit made, I will begin designing a carbon fiber mount to attach it to a roof rack.

Nicely done...captured it perfectly.
