Who says a BWM wagon isn't a good camper or well-suited for Africa?

I concur with this, though prices do seem to be trending downward compared to the way they were a few years ago. It still makes me LOL a bit when I see someone selling a low-mile 3rd gen for $15,000, but I guess somewhere out there is a sucker who would pay that. :D
.
Don't forget that in addition to an engine that is marginal in terms of MPG the 3rd gen also has a tiny fuel tank (18.5) gallons. Go over to the T4R.org forum and you see lot's of people bitching about having an effective operating range of around 200 miles, which is pathetic.
.
By contrast, a GMT-800 Tahoe would give you a 295hp V8 returning slightly lower MPG than the 4runner but with a 26 gallon gas tank, considerably longer range. It also has a roomier interior.

Maybe not $15k, but sign me up as the sucker that would be willing to pay $12k for a clean 3rd gen. The 3rd gen is one of, if not the best, all-around SUVs I can think of. If something were to happen to mine, I would be in the market for another one.

200 miles on 18.5 gallons of fuel would be pathetic...that's 10.8 MPG. The problem is the fuel light comes on ridiculously early. My low fuel light comes on when I have used only 12.8 gallons of the 18.5 gallon tank. At that point I have usually traveled only 240 miles but there is still close to 6 gallons left in the tank. My truck is slightly thirstier than most because I'm lifted on larger tires and have a ~285 hp supercharged V6. It usually returns 19-19.5 MPG on the highway, but it used to get 21-22 MPG when I had 265/75R16 tires.

A sleeping platform is a great way to expand the space for travel.

Here is my 3rd gen 'build' if you have any interest. BUILD A sleeping platform is my next project.
