4Runner Rear Door Hate

I've got a 1991 4runner with a rear window off its rails. The only thing I don't like about this truck is this rear door and its inability to open when the window is shut. Has anybody out there in their expedition builds converted the door to something not ridiculous, like a regular top opening door? I will never have a need for a rear window so don't care if it rolls up or down.

I had a 1992 4Runner and HATED the design also. the 96+'s finally got it figured out, but from all the research I did I could not find a single way around the rear hatch.

I see that you are in Vancouver island, close to me. Here in the lowermainland there are many people that will put it on the rail, and replace the motor for around $300.

Best advice I have.

I could replace the door for $200 but then I'd need to repaint everything. The wrecker wants $650 for a door, which I'm not willing to pay, considering the truck cost $800 in the first place.

I'm not a fan of it either. Fortunately, mine's a 1st gen so I can just ditch the hard top and use something else that doesn't require the glass.

You could always do this:

Had a 96..... same thing. It really is kind of love/hate thing.

Tailgate is nice for sitting on though....... its about the only thing I miss in upgrading to a '99.

when i first got my 95 i loved the tailgate idea. still kinda do when im just sittin watchin the kids or something. now that its lifted, its impossible to reach stuff up in the front of the cargo area.
