Hi all,
anyone know what models of 4WD truck will carry a 20ft shipping container?

Isuzu FTS seems just a little short?

What about extending the wheelbase? I was talking yesterday to a guy who's doing just that to a MAN TGM truck. His body is being made to 6.2M, 300mm is being added to wheelbase to make it fit and be legal.

The problem with carrying a 20 foot container on a 4x4 truck is the GVW.

On a two axle truck you will be limited to a 33,000 GVW.

The truck with that GVW will probably weigh about 18,000 lbs.

Add the container at 5,000 and you are limited to a payload of 11,000 lbs.

If you use a three axle truck the GVW goes up to about 50,000 lbs.

The next issue you will have is height. The bed on my truck is 60" off the ground. This limits container height. The truck height is limited to 13'6"

As far as the trucks go there are a lot of class 7 or 8 trucks that can be set up this way.

Freightliners are available with factory all wheel drive.

Marmon Herrington and Fabco both have conversion kits for common trucks.

There are also several companies such as Manning Equipment and Tulsa Truck Manufacturing that do conversions.

Manning Equipment did the conversion on my truck.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Except the height thing. You'll still be at a allowable over the road height with most platforms, although you will still need to account for height in your route planning. You'll do better if you can fit a twistlock frame instead of a flatbed, as you'll decrease your overall height a little. I'm assuming you're planning to use a 20G0 container?

20 foot containers are either 8 foot or 8 foot 6 inches tall.

The 40 foot and longer containers are available in 9 foot 6 inches tall.

My truck will be right at 13 foot 6 inches with a 8 foot 6 inch container on it.

A class 7 or 8 truck the typical frame height is between 40 and 42 inches.

The AWD conversion raises the frame height of the truck about 6 to 8 inches.

You could lower the container about 6 inches by using a twist lock container frame.

The use of the container frame limits the truck to just hauling containers and can lead to some issues with loading and unloading under less than ideal conditions.

You could also keep the rear frame at standard height by using Z brackets but this would probably lengthen the vehicle by several feet to accommodate the brackets and the transfer case.
