Fastenal is selling shackles with a working load limit of 5 tons for $4.67 online:
http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/detail.ex?sku=0599904&ucst=t

Their website says the price is good until June 30 (2009).

I bought some in my local store today for $7.19. Still a good price and I did not want to wait or pay for shipping. Regular price is just under $12.

I've got no affiliation with Fastenal; just wanted to pass along the news.

Thanks,

This is my first time to purchase these. Are they the standard size everyone likes to use for recovery work? Also is the load rating on these standard for recovery work?

For our types of vehicles, a 19mm (3/4") rigging shackle with a 4.75 ton WLL and a minimum 4x safety factor is appropriate. I like the 4.75 metric ton, 6x safety factor 19mm shackles from Viking (made in Holland). You are looking at a 60,000 lb + minimum breaking strength with those!

Very nice shackles, also spendy. I was looking also at the shackles that Northern Tool sells. They seem a little cheap price wise, not sure if they are of acceptable quality.

Just wondering if you have to have a corporate account with Fastenal to order from them. When you add the shackles to your shopping cart and proceed to checkout one of the required field's asks for a company name.

No-Most use 3/4 rated shackles in recovery, which have a 7/8 pin. They are typically available 3 ways: 1) Unrated, 2) 4 3/4 Ton, 3) 6.5 Ton.

Awhile back, one of the members here had a special on Fasenal USA 3/4 shackles with the 6.5 Ton WLL rating. They were $11 each if you bought 5. These are the really nice USA forged shackles, and are basically the best available. That was a killer price, I should have bought 10 instead of 5.

The standard hardware store shackles will be made in China, and rated 4 3/4 ton. Typical cost $10-$12.

Tractor Supply and a few other places sell unrated shackles. I see no reason to use these as then you are guessing at the type/quality of metal used.

The WLL ratings are for overhead lifts (like a crane) which isn't directly applicable to recovery, but typical safety margins are 5-6X rated strength.

smitty built shackles

Was at 4wheel parts today and picked up a 4.75 ton WLL shackle for 12.99. It is powdercoated black and I thought it was a decent deal. Along with that I got some other goodies as a beginning to my recovery gear.

Hi Lift Base plate
3"X30' Recovery strap
Hi Lift handle keeper

I bought a handful of 3/4" Van Beest green pin screw shackles that Scott is showing above from http://www.e-rigging.com/ Their service and delivery was very prompt and they were $13.77 a piece. I asked for the certificates in case there is ever a failure. It says the shackles have a working load limit of 4.75 tons, proof tested to 9.5 tons, and the minimum breaking load is 28.5 tons…should be strong enough for my uses.
