Question about overall height

Hi everyone,

Well, I need some input and thought the hard side group would be the ones who might have the best input. I am right at the point of deciding to start the camper build of my M1010 project (see link in sig) or move to a different platform (i.e. truck/popup camper) but I would really like to see the M1010 get built.

Here is the problem and the question. The interior height is 65" with my wife and I being in the 5'9"-5'11" range, isn't quite tall enough. While taking some measurements this past weekend, she commented that the lack of headroom isn't going to work in her opinion. I have had two thoughts about how to solve this (outside of buying something else). One is a pop top like a Sportmobile or a fixed, raised roof setup. The pop top has the advantage of low profile when down but disadvantage of dealing with sealing, soft sides, etc. A fixed, raise roof is just the opposite of these.

Here's the long winded question. As it sits the top of the box sits about 9'6" above the road. I would likely need to add about 8-10" to be able to stand fully up. This puts the rig at almost 10.5' tall. Is this too tall to be reasonable or will this really limit places I could travel?

Although I haven't measured my truck, it's unlikely that you'll be higher than I am. I have 6'6" of standing room inside.

I can't go to drive-throughs, parking structures are off-limits, and I have to be careful around trees on heavily-banked streets. But I can still drive around town, to work, etc. It's really not a problem.

If I recall correctly, our 1999 Bigfoot camper sits about 12 1/2 feet overall height when loaded on our F350. In the time we've had the camper we've not run across any place we flat out couldn't get to strictly because of the height. There have been a couple places where we've had to take an alternate route, or had to deal with some special procedures. For example, we have to be escorted through the tunnel in Zion National Park so we can drive down the middle of the tunnel, but that's standard practice there for just about any RV.

I think at 10 1/2 feet you should be fine, and the benefits of being able to stand up are worth the occasional inconvenience while travelling.

I measured the OS height of 1994 NL 9.6 camper on our 2006 2500 Dodge quad cab with airbags at 50 pounds. We are at 10 or 10-1/2 feet tall. Camper is 660 Kg or 1452 pounds.

Just a thought, but an older Alaskan hard side pop-up camper would be perfect for your truck and very low profile. Just my .02

Mine is 12'-6" with the ac and storage compartment on top.
