In my Baja days the only "awning" that would survive was a swap meet type with four poles and a sun reflective tarp. We'd use the type with a gable.
The poles fit in a couple of 4" ABS sewer tubes lashed to the rack. Corners,tarp and bungees would be stored in a milk crate.
Guys with small trucks or SUV's didn't have the load capacity.
