We have realized our goal of following the Continental Divide as closely as possible in Jeeps. We left home in southeast Nebraska on the 26th of August and finished the run from the Flathead River on the Canadian border to the port of entry at Antelope Wells, New Mexico. In the 17 days from Canada to the Mexican border we crossed the divide numerous times. We followed the Oregon trail as we crossed the Great Divide Basin in Wyoming. The Bannack Pass trail in Wyoming will test you. We traveled over high mountain passes and low passes in order to complete the trip. We camped all but three nights during the trip. Mostly great weather but sometimes in the mud, rain and we nearly always had frost on the tents in the morning. Even the wolves we had in camp in New Mexico didn't deter us.
Every day was different. Every day presented a new challenge to us and our vehicles.
Total miles from leaving home and arriving back at home will be close to 6000. We drove nearly 3500 miles during the trip from north to south. Most of this was on gravel county roads, forest service roads and mountain trails with rocks and 180 degree hairpin turns with drop offs on either side of 300-1000 feet that hardly deserved the name "road". Then there is the quicksand in New Mexico. Much of the time we had to be in low range. Winches and high clearance vehicles are the best to have. A Pull Pal will come in handy too.
If anyone wants to follow in our tracks, a word to the wise, make sure every thing in your vehicle is in good mechanical condition and tied down securely because the rough roads and rocky trails will test every mechanical part of your rig account the constant pounding of the rough roads.
