Excellent trips. :) Any leopard frogs in that pond in the White Mountains? I've been up there a few times and love that area. I ran the carpet road from your part 2 in 2003 and was freaked out by it. It was pretty interesting back then, glad to hear it is still a cool road. I camped at nearly the same spot in Turkey Creek, I remember that cliff in your photos. Turkey Creek is amazing, I heard a Mexican spotted owl calling the night we camped there and we chased a troop of coatis the next morning. Great area. Thanks for the memories.

Hey Tim looks like you guys had a great weekend! Beautiful up in the White Mountains, hoping to get up there in August! Looks like I'll have to check out Turkey Creek and that canyon sometime too...

How fun....Tim!

I always enjoy your trips and pics!

Thanks for sharing...........

Remember I told you about my trip to Texas.......we came down through Clifton after the driver missed the left turn up in Alpine (I wanted to head for Silver City that night)! I looked over and saw that huge hole in the ground after dark. The whole place just looked freeky at night! It looked huge even at night! Drove through the old town and felt like I needed to go back there one day and just walk around.

Tim - awesome trip report, gotta love the White Mountains.

That photo looks familiar - Bonito Creek at the Y55 crossing?

Ursidae69,
I didn't see any frogs up there, but there were a ton in Reddington of all places while it rained! Thats so cool that you've run that road. You're the first person that I've found who has run it. Seems to be a forgotten road!
I had to tow strap the white runner up the hills, but it was still freaky.

Duncan,
Where are the nevada pics?!? Clifton does rock. If we can get a group to move there we can turn it into another Jerome!!

Missr2fj,
Sounds good! I'll try to show you some cool roads that we found!

SWR,
haha! I do remember the story. What a trip you had! Clifton is definately a bit creepy. Such a bustling town completely reliant on one business employing them all!!

Westy,
Exactly! that area was amazing. I had never seen any of that area of the white mountains. Its now my favorite.

Back in the day, one of the Expo members here used to attend a school that sat on the edge of that PD mine in Morenci. The school was sliding into the mine itself, so the position of the school was checked daily while a new school was under construction.

My family has live in that area for close to 40 years, and I still like visiting it. I could tell you about some awesome drives around the San Francisco river that start right around where you were in Clifton.

Good shots, I miss AZ.

I'll attach my camp from that night, might be the same spot in Turkey Creek. That rock face sure looks familar! I don't really have any pics of the steep carpet section as I was white-knuckling it all the way up. :)

Nice! Thats a heck of a trail. I didn't get any pics of the carpet section either. Definately too scary to be snapping pics on!

Fergie,
Wow, that had to be scary for those parents and kids. It looked like that pit was eating the countryside around it it was so huge! I hope that the historic district gets re-done some day. It was really really cool!

That was me, that went to the school there. They used to call that part of town "Old Morenci". The expansion of the pit finally absorbed the old high school. When they would blast in the mine (3:30pm every day), it was like being in an earthquake at the school. Some of you have heard of the artist (painter) De Grazia. He was in the first gradusting class in that school building. I was in the first graduating class from the new school building (1983).

I also remember shopping at many of the businesses in Old Clifton. Your pics show them all boarded up now, except for the bar. Too bad, it was an interesting old place.

Thanks for the pics, and bringing back 18 years of memories.:wavey:

A big group of us were just out at hurricane lake, big lake, pachetta, and the west fork area and the mapping/route designation was pretty bad but the area was beautiful and the apache trout were impressive.

Is the Turkey creek trail in that general area, cause we had one hell of a time locating some good trail runs due to piss poor mapping.

That area is tough to map and or navigate sometimes because most maps do not have accurate road #'s for the reservation roads, infact many maps show different road # designations for the same road. Many of the roads are not even marked.

I do not believe Turkey Creek trail is in that area (White Mtns). Very few real 4x4 roads exist up there. Most are just high clearance roads, 4x4 rarely needed unless its wet.
