Anza Borrego - Carrizo Gorge Railroad Camp - Petrified Wood Hunting

I decided to take a short notice trip out to the desert to check out an abandoned railroad camp in the southern end of the park. The ruins were built to support the construction of the San Diego & Eastern Arizona Railroad through Carrizo Gorge. Standing amongst the old dilapidated structures is like a glimpse to the past. There is one wall of the camp still standing constructed of old blasting powder cans held together by mortar. Afterwards, I headed out east of Carrizo Mountain to look for petrified wood. It was nice to get out.

Looks like it was pretty quiet out there, except for the huge Sunrise Powerlink Construction helicopter. :sombrero:
Amazing all the dust it is kicking up.

Love that area of Borrego,
Bob

That was actually a military helicopter practicing manuvers but the one for the power lines was in the area.

Nice! so, whats the story on the concrete road? It looks like the elements are reclaiming it.

I believe that is old Highway 80 which was the main east to west corridor before the 8 Freeway was built.
Bob

Yep, that was the original CA Hwy 80 built in the 30's.
