73' 109 resto

So I recently dropped off my LandRover for restoration. I wanted to start this thread for ideas. The landy is being restored over the next three years while I'm in Japan. As of right now there are only a few additions to the original truck; New wiring, new chassis, new interior. I've also talked about with the rebuilders as doing A rollbar to help facilitate a bikini top. The suspension and brakes of all been refreshed as well as a new gasket kit on my low mileage 2.25 L engine.

My goal for the restoration is to have a reliable daily driver and I would still like to do the long road trip from the Florida Panhandle along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to tour the Mayan temples.

For anyone that has done or has had a restoration done if you have any tips or any ideas I'm open ears. Also I haven't purchased the new chassis yet so if anybody knows of a galvanized chassis for a good price somewhere in the Southeast feel free to send me a message.

Thanks

Spend as much of your budget on quality parts(genuine where applicable) and rebuild/buy new on as many parts as you can. No point on it looking shiny and it having a hot shower built in if it can't get you back home.

Yep no substitute for doing the work yourself so you know what to do when the stuff hits the fan. Sounds like that is not an option though considering your current out of country plans. So, you will need to pack spares, and know how to install them. So research the common spares that are frequently needed and carry the green bible. I carry a tool bag that covers quite a few eventualities however it is difficult to anticipate everything. Sounds like you have exciting plans for your 109, that is awesome! Have fun and safe travels.

Couldn't agree more... knowing how everything works will help you 10000%.

Bring a good toolset, and some spare wire/tape/hose. Will get you out of 90% of bad situations.

Since it appears you are keeping the vehicle close to original, I would suggest upgrading your rear differential to a salisbury unit to get added bearing axle strength, rebuild both drive shaft with new high strength u joints, really consider upgrading your springs to parabolics since you are planning a really long distance trip. go through the cooling system and rebuild or replace the radiator. An overdrive would improve the quality of your drive if you can find one Lastly if the transmission and xtr case haven't been gone through I suggest this as well. If you choose not to pursue any of these then add more spare parts to your list
