Thanks for that, I really hope that 12,8lt Int' works well because on the US hwy market DD and cummins are the only good EGR / DPF diesels. So do you the US mil' will buy them ?

update on cabin plans

DSC01916.jpg

Top pic is Hanzik's trial truck a RM70 version of the T813, its a ( light arms ) armored cabin used on T813 and T815 chassis, I have loosely planned a hybrid cab, a cross between the latest T817 & RM70 cabin, by the way the 817 is not armored, but a armor installation kit is offered.
I intended to use A514 ( T1 ) 3/16" thick plate, 110,000 PSI tempered alloy steel, I will need 210 sq/ft cut by the steel supplier close to each panel size, it will then be shipped to plasma / water jet cutting specialist, door side section will be water jet so joint clearance line is close, all other edges openings widows etc will be plasma cut to help my wallet, most the work will revolve around the 2 doors and there openings for weather strip, locks and sliding windows. I will prove the design in particle board / plywood first.
This cabin is going to be raised 3" higher and 6" rearward, top of new cabin will still be lower than normal as these cabins where design low profile to aid Hercules transportation, the rearward position along with require movement of steering box & shifter will shorten the large standard front overhang to the newer Terrno and T817 spec' close approx' 40 deg approach angle.
The military 2 piece 11.25" - 21' od wheels will be widened to 18.00 to mount Michelin XZL 24R21 tires these measure 23.9 w x 54" dia, in Russian, Kraz 1300x530-533 tires are readily available, slightly narrower but use same 18.00 width rims. To give you some idea the tires on the white Hanzik truck are 17"w x 53"od.
I have be debating in my own mind about tires, easy option is 16.00 X 20 but the wheel available ex mil are all small 11.25" bolt pattern with small pilot hole so re machining is required, I had already purchased the Tatra mil wheels and the Michelin 24R21 XZL's are the norm on "airport crash rescue" trucks world wide

More US Tatras

We have three of these, but they're not much in favor. They seem to break often and parts are a pain to get.

I bet what breaks is not Tatra made ie the US engine Cat C13 / ISM Cummins or the TwinDisc Trans ????

Interesting build! The Tatra reminds me of a HEMTT (Hemet.)

Why air cooled? Seems like an odd choice for an all-season vehicle. Is it for simplicity?

Anybody remember the Gama Goat? It had an air cooled 3 cyl diesel that was about as loud as a commercial jet engine! I'm so glad they phased that out when I was in the Army, I would probably have permanent hearing loss from driving it.

Is that a Stevenson ?
I want go this way for several reasons

1. Strength / Stiffness of high strength alloy steel negates the need for roll cages, which will save a rock through the door scenario

2, Cabs are the weakest link on used trucks, Tatra seem to suffer from rust more than other Euro trucks, think its a combination of being used offroad maybe lower quality coatings.

3. Looks looks and looks

Gama Goat had the great DD ( Detroit Diesel ) 3-53 if I'm not mistaken but they (DD) are all water cooled

" Tatra why Air Cooled " well simplicity is certainly 1 point but reliability for arctic conditions is the main reason, an acquaintance / Czech contact of mine has told me me endlessly how great the T815's are with there air cooled V10 - V12's in adverse Siberian conditions, read reliability and ease of service. Apparently their are over 7000 Tatra of various decades working in eastern Russia, there biggest problem for Tatra selling more is 1, price they have the highest purchase price, 2, Availability approx 18 month order / delivery wait time.

Here's pics of TerrN0 8x8's at the factory prior to delivery to Russian Gazprom, think it says something, they could by any truck !ImageUploadedByTapatalk1346183571.585203.jpg

I always likes Tatras and Kamaz. Interesting link about navistar. However how does the dual front wheel turning work? Hydralic, or all mechanical?
