Propane Camp Fire?

Pulled the trigger this week and bought the one from Camco. I love real fires but where we are going this weekend has a ban on wood fires. It will be in the mid teens and low twenties. I posed a question in another thread, any way to make the Camco more efficient? Thinking of adding lava rock to it

We are going to pick up a Campfire in a Can for the spring. We get the same or similar bans to you guys in WA and it really sucks going camping and NOT being able to have a fire. The kids like it, and I just dont feel like I am camping without one. Our friends picked one up last summer, and we used it with them on a few nights... works great, easy to use, and the bonus, we can use it on the deck at home too!

Nothing like a wood fire, but this is a close second and WAY better than nada.

Ended up with an Outland Firebowl with a lid. Works great, puts off a lot of heat and was $149 compared to $299 for the Campfire In A Can here. Love it.

Yeah, it is pretty good unit. It puts out good heat at the lowest setting too, which should last a good while on my 10 LB tank. I also like the lid...that was critical. They only started offering the lid this summer on these, so I managed to get the first ones of the first batch. So far so good, and a great price. The only issue, it can drop some crud from the ceramic rocks out of the side and bottom whereas the CIC is enclosed. I simply put it in a bag. Done.

DIY propane campfire

I didn't like the cost or weight of the propane campfires available so I made one from an 16" aluminum deep dish pizza pan and 1/2" aluminum tubing. I don't have a pic of that but here's the same design using an 18" galvanized garbage can lid that I found on the side of the road. The 1/2" aluminum tubing has 1/16th inch holes drilled every 2 inches to let the propane out and the end is hammered flat. The aluminum tubing is held to the pan by 1/2" Electrical Metallic Tube (EMT) fasteners. I'm sure length of of the straight part could be half what is shown to make a more compact design.

This one burns hotter than my 16" pizza pan version and is more durable. I've also found there is no need to haul lava rock around to put in the pan - there's always rocks laying on the ground.
