86 4runner question

Hey Toyota folks.
I have been looking for an 85-86 4runner or 60 for quite awhile, leaning towards the 60. But recently I started to like the idea of the 4runner. So i have been searching high and low, I dont really know what I am looking for outside of the realm common sense and a manual transmission. And I have noticed that the prices on these older 4runners are all over the map. so my question is this:
what is an 85-86 sr5 4runner with a 5spd man tran worth? 170K + miles. I have found one 60 miles away from me but the price seems a bit high...can anyone provide a little insight for me?

Thanks

Chris

here is the CL link to the one I have found. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/1494207848.html

well after looking at the pics in the ad, i can tell you that that is a DLX not an SR5. It is obvious from the speedometer. Not as many goodies. the 1984-1985 4Runners were solid axle and the '85 being the best because it came with fuel injection as well as the solid axle.

And as a result, you almost always pay more for the '85's. Around my area you can get a clean pretty clean '86 for around 2500-3000 but and '85 goes north of that to $4500-5000.
Also you should make note of the fact that some '85-86 trucks and 4runners did not have EFI.

I was starting to type out all that, but didnt feel like going into details with all that so i just posted up the link that has all that information in it.

IMO i would rather buy a pickup/4runner that is IFS if you want solid axle, add it, just for the fact that you already have the proper steering box and the fact that they are usually much cheaper.

Yes, x2. You will pay a premium for an 85 since it is considered the Holy Grail of toyota mini trucks and 4runners. However, if you find a later model 1st generation, with IFS, you can save up and add the solid axle later. If you like creature comforts, you will get more power options available in the later years. My 89 had power windows, locks, mirrors, antenna and a bit more refined styling for the door panels. My 84 has power windows and antenna, and its considered a "loaded" SR5.

I think every 4Runner 85 and later has EFI but I know some trucks had carbs until at least 87 (I have one).

Bring me $5000 and you can have my 87 4Runner complete with 22RT-E with a T3/T4 on it. If you are anywhere near Asslanta Ga that is. :victory:

Carbs were possible on the trucks until the next gen body change, and possibly even after that for a couple of years.

My '86 2wd turbo Xcab shortbed 5 spd truck has power windows & door locks. I'd rather that it did not. The power door locks are handy, but if I really need them I can go aftermarket for them. Dirt & power windows do not play well together.

AFAIK the turbo runnr's only ever came with an auto. If you see one with a manual it is likely to have been swapped in.

22 RTE's (RET depending on who you ask) are known for popping head gaskets. Mine is, and the anal Toyota trained mechanic PO told me that he'd just replaced it. Next time around, if I do it, it will get ARP head studs.

Prices in Colorado range from $600-$4000 for a 1985-1989 4Runner but you can usually find one in good condition and with a lot of miles left for less than $2000. You might want to check out crazedlist.org as it allows you to search multiple areas around the country.

Good luck and take your time so you don't end up paying too much.

Exactly.

Mine was swapped in out of a crawler that was flipped (or so the story goes) before I got it. They jammed in a TRD cam and head studs on it as well i'm told. Mine runs about 7 lbs of boost. Tuned by MAF. Some say thats fine, others say it's terrible. All I know is it runs good and is fun.
