88 Toyota Landcruiser question?

Hey guys, I just noticed an 88 TLC for sale in my area and I was just wondering if $5K seemed reasonable? It had 200K miles on it but looked like it was in great shape. I love that body style as well. Just wondering.

$5k is very reasonable if it's in really good shape, personally would not shy away from 200k, you should generally get another 100k out of it before a rebuild. Post some more details?

Darn 62s hold there value really well. I would say that is a more reasonable price than most I have seen. Especially if it is a clean NM truck.

Personally, I think its a bit high, but that's based on very little info. If it is TOTALLY rust free, then maybe, but I've seen a lot of nice 200k FJ60/62's for 3000-4000. Have you scanned regional craigslist adds to see what others are asking?

Here's an example in Denver:

Denver CL is the center of the Craigslist universe for used Landcruisers. 40's, 55's, 60's, 80's, 100's....doesn't matter, they are all there. And maybe Bend, OR too...

I've been hot and heavy in the hunt for a FJ62 for about a year now. With more shopping and looking, you can find a $5K 60 or 62 with some mods (ARB bullbar, OME lift, etc.) with under 200K miles. If it's stock with 200K for $5K, I would keep looking for a better deal. Most stock 200K milers I've seen over the last year on CL, eBay and Auotrader go for $2500-$4000. I look several times a week...

Actually, I would go buy this in Albuquerque - '89 FJ62 with 96K original for $6K. Now that mileage is worth ponying up the extra bucks!

$5k is not too high for a REALLY clean truck, IMO. But have no illusions about those miles, there will be work to do and there is no guarantee it will go another 100k. There's a lot of mystique around old LCs but in then end it is still just a truck that may or may not have been taken care of.

This is coming from someone who bought a similar "clean good running $4k LC" years ago and is now ready to stop messing around with it and get something else. It's been a great truck, my 3rd LC actually. But I'm now done with what used to pass for toyota reliability. I want NEW toyota reliability! :D

I sold my last 84 FJ60 for $8500...

I think $5K for darn near any land cruiser is a great deal....

Condition, condition, condition...

"typical rust" will drop the value of a rig $2k-3k IMO, even some minor rust easily drops it $1000-1500 or more. Take a $4k 60/62 with some minor rust on the front doors (at the W/S), some minor rust on the rear hatch (around the glass) and some minor rust in the license plate light of the tailgate... and it would cost you $1k-2k to fix, or more. Starts making a $5k-$6k "no work needed" legitly clean 60/62 worth it.

I can pick up a running/driving 60 here in town for $750-2k all day long, a couple a week at that. But the bodies are junk, the frames are pretty sad in the rear and they would need alot of drivetrain service just to bring them around. Legitly clean rigs here in SLC demand a premium, not uncommon to see a clean 62 sell for $5k.

Don't do the work yourself? A knuckle rebuild can cost $1k at a shop, a motor rebuild $4k, even a simple brake job $500. Consider all of that when buying a used rig... ask for service histories, pay a shop to do an inspection of it, or check it our really well yourself.

...as Kurt mentioned....doing your own work really helps on these rigs....A factory service manual and parts from good resources, like Kurt and others, are a big help!
