1988 VW Vanagon Multivan 1.9 l Turbo Diesel with a 5 speed transmission
From Germany, imported into Canada 5 years ago. New motor from Germany installed 20,000 kilometres ago, This is not the sluggish underpowered VW Diesel that they put in the north american versions in the early 80's. The 1.9l Turbo Diesel produces plenty of power, gets great fuel economy. Cruises easily at highway speeds and climbs big hills with no trouble. Same motor that's in the Jetta, Golf, and Passat so parts are easy to find and reasonably priced.
Transmission rebuilt by Rancho Transmissions in california 10,000 kilometres ago.
Body is not to bad but it needs some rust repair and paint.
Tinted windows in passenger area, new alpine stereo. Interesting note: Dash pad is not a pad, it is made of powder coated aluminum and looks same as the soft ones, so it will never crack in the sun, must be a european thing. Mechanically this van is good to very good and it is a pleasure to drive with the five speed and gets excellent fuel economy. It also has an additional set of Projekztwo foglights installed in the lower grill.
This is the Multivan edition which is the same as the weekender. Originally it had a rear facing seat that has a flip up bottom with a storage area inside. Sadly the seat is missing as are all of the 5 headrests. The European versions of the Multivan had no cabinetry at all to interfere with the lower bed so you get the entire width of the van for sleeping which is very nice compared to the full camper westfalia's. You also get the third seat on the bench. The fibreglass top is in great shape and the canvas is in good shape with only one tear that has been stitched and no rot. The front seats have had seat covers on since new and look great. It is such a great combination of drivetrain and Multivan edition that it is absolutely worth putting the love into it. Wife says it has to go.
I will be truly sad to see this one go and will be looking for a good home for it.
