Very Nice. Anyone want to buy my 1978 FJ45 LWB so I can get this?

Serious, I think I would consider selling my pride and joy for that.

From my understanding of the import laws...this really shouldn't be here.

But since it is, I'm guessing one shouldn't have too much trouble registering it in another state.

My concern would be the liability (if any) if/when someone starts to investigate the legality of the import? Would hate to get in a wreck and have the insurance company start an investigation or have the police find out that it isn't legal and impound it. I know those stories are out there.

Any thoughts?

If it is legally imported via a RI...it is legal, yes? Is there question as to the age?

Here is my understanding of the import laws as it relates to non-north american vehicles...

Older than 25 years = no problems. You can bring in anything from any country.

Not 25 years old = possible via a registered importer, though on a limited basis (it must be on the list of vehicles eligible for importation).

The law specifically mentions LHD vs. RHD, to my knowledge the only eligible RHD vehicle is the Skyline GTS/GTR (R33/34).

Here are the eligible Land Cruisers from list based on my understanding:

1984 to 1988 LHD. Background: Champagne Imports petitioned the NHTSA to decide whether Non-US 1981 - 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser MPVs were eligible for importation. They were successful in their petition.

1989 LHD - same as above (I think) but the docket # isn't available online. You have to request a copy from the NHTSA.

1990-1996 LHD - This docket isn't available either, you must request a copy from NHTSA.

Given this is a RHD vehicle, I don’t think that it can be a 100% legit.

I could be wrong…been known to happen lots before! :sombrero:

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
It is what they call a grey market vehicle. There is a very small chance it is here legally but it is possible. Somehow they found a loop hole perhaps where it was importable and registered but perhaps circumvented customs or something like that.. . It is a good question. I owned a '87 HJ60 in 2001 that was questionable. You occasionally hear stories of the federales coming and confiscating your vehicle so anything is possible. But yes that would be an amazing vehicle...
