Hey guys I need some help.
I got a 95 Montero sr that won't start, it all started when I was driving home and the truck started misfiring, I pulled over, shot the truck off, and waited 5 mins. and started the truck again but it was hesitating to accelerate no matter how hard I would push on the pedal, then just before getting home it died on me, I tried to start it one more time, but this time it will just crank, but won't start. I checked for spark on one of the spark plugs, I got spark. I checked for fuel, I got fuel. Fuel pump is working fine, I sprayed starting fuel and nothing!! Ive checked everything twice, from spark, to fuel, to ground continuity, I've check for power to the crankshaft sensor, I get 12v and good ground. I even swapped the Ignition Control Module three times from three different vehicles, 2 from 2 different Montero Sports' both V6 and another from a 3000 GT, all three ICMs were picked up at my local pick a part yard. Anything else that you guys think I might of missed? Please help, I've been trying to put my Monty back on the road for a week now. Thanks!!

Hmm... I've seen this once before on my raider. The timing belt jumped a tooth, then another.

Let's think about this logically. Internal combustion engines need three things to work under compression to keep running. Ignition, you already checked spark so you are good there. Next oxygen, I'm assuming you don't have any rags stuffed in your intake. Finally you need fuel, I believe you have adequate fuel, but there is the possibility that you experienced a fuel delivery failure of some sort. I think it is unlikely, but possible. So, if your timing belt isn't off (possible tensioner failure) then I would first inspect fuel filter, followed by fuel pump.

Timing is pretty easy to check. Just remove the little access panels off of the covers. Once you find TDC On the crank, you need to line up the divot on the sprocket to the line mark on the rear cover.

Thanks Jay Ayala, I really appreciate your help, I went out and checked my timing belt, and the timing is way off, like for a few teeth. Now I gotta find out what caused it to skip. At least I know now what the problem is and can get it taken care of. Once again thanks!
I'll update this thread when my Monty is up and running again.

Miloe, you are aware that this engine is an interference engine right? Be cognizant of that as you fix this. I would hate to see you bend some valves. I'm not sure if being a few teeth off on your timing belt will cause the Pistons to collide with the valves or not. I would like to think that there is a little room to avoid that but I'm not exactly sure. I hope not for your sake.

The most likely culperate is a failed tensioner, or a really old and cracked timing belt. It is kind of difficult for timing belts to jump teeth under normal operating conditions.

Quick question to OP, did you have any lights on, on your dash? My 01 sport just died while driving after replacing the Alt. And I have CEL, Batt, oil, and brake lights on with the 4wd selector flashing and intermittent ABS light... hoping not a computer...

No, I had no lights on in the dash when my Monty stopped running, it was running fine and it just stopped. My problem was the timing belt, yours sound like something more electrical, like a bad battery or fuse. Hope is nothing major.
